The Mersey Ferry is an iconic way to see the Liverpool and Wirral skylines, operating between the Pier Head (Liverpool), Seacombe (Wallasey), and Woodside (Birkenhead) in Merseyside.
The standard River Explorer Cruise takes about 50 minutes. It’s a classic “see it to say you’ve done it” activity, but honestly, it’s genuinely lovely for the views alone. Most people remember the song Ferry across the Mersey by Gerry and the Pacemakers who is also tributed with making the song ‘You’ll never walk alone’ a massive hit and football anthem.
What to expect:
The Experience: It’s mostly a sightseeing trip. You get a narrated guide over the speakers about the “Three Graces” and the city’s maritime history. Most people spend about an hour here, or longer if they hop off to explore the terminals.
For the Kids: It’s a hit with younger children who just love being on a boat, but there isn’t much “action” on board. There isn’t a playground; the excitement is the wind in your hair and watching the big ships.
For Teens: They might find the slow pace a bit dull after the first ten minutes, though it’s a prime spot for photos of the skyline.
Supervision: You’ll need to keep a close eye on wandering toddlers near the deck rails, so it isn’t a “sit back and ignore them” kind of trip for parents.
Euerka! Science + Discovery, a new interactive science attraction aimed at children and young people. This is a major draw for families. It’s a multi-room attraction dedicated to space and sci-fi. It’s very hands-on and much more likely to keep school-aged kids and teens entertained than the boat ride itself.
Good to know:
Discounts: Look out for combined tickets that include the ferry and the U-Boat Story (at Woodside). There are usually savings for families, seniors, and Blue Light Card holders.
Annual Passes: If you live locally and fancy regular boat trips, the annual passes are decent value, but for visitors, a one-off ticket is plenty.
Food & Parking: Food on the ferries is limited to basic snacks and drinks. There is paid parking at the Pier Head (can be pricey) and usually easier, cheaper parking options near the Seacombe terminal.
Nearby Wins: At the Pier Head, you’re right next to the Museum of Liverpool and the Royal Liver Building. Over at Seacombe, there’s a nice promenade for a walk, and Woodside has a great food market with local independent stalls that’s much better for a meal than the ferry cafe.
