Waddesdon Manor is the most astonishing sight in Buckinghamshire — a French Renaissance château, turrets and all, crowning a hilltop above the Vale of Aylesbury. Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild built it in the 1870s and 80s purely for beauty, for entertaining, and to house one of the finest private art collections ever assembled, and today it’s among the National Trust’s most visited houses, still cared for by the Rothschild family’s own foundation.
The House and Collection
Inside is pure gilded opulence: Sèvres porcelain, French royal furniture, carpets from Versailles and paintings by Gainsborough, Reynolds and the Dutch masters, all displayed in rooms designed to dazzle Victorian society — Queen Victoria herself came to marvel at the newfangled electric lighting. Look out for the Rothschild Treasury, a glittering vault of jewels and curiosities, and a programme of exhibitions that keeps the house fresh year after year.
Gardens, Aviary and Woodland Play
The grounds are a Victorian showpiece: the famous parterre blazing with tens of thousands of bedding plants, fountains, a rose garden, and the exquisite Rococo-style Aviary, still a working conservation centre for endangered exotic birds. Families are well looked after too, with trails through the parkland and the brand-new Wild Wood Adventure Playground opening in summer 2026. At Christmas the whole estate becomes one of England’s great festive days out, with a light trail and fair.
Visiting Waddesdon Manor
Waddesdon is on the A41 between Aylesbury and Bicester. Everyone — including National Trust members, who otherwise enter free — should pre-book timed house tickets, as capacity is limited and weekends sell out; grounds-only tickets are a lovely cheaper option. The house generally closes early in the week and over deep winter, so check opening days before travelling. Codebreaking fans can pair it with Bletchley Park for a full Buckinghamshire weekend.
