Set inside the iconic Victorian Alexandra Palace in North London — known affectionately as “Ally Pally” — this is one of the most atmospheric places to skate anywhere in the UK. The indoor rink sits in the Palace’s East Court and is open all year round, welcoming everyone from wobbly first-timers to Olympic-level figure skaters.
A Rink with Real History
The ice rink opened on 4 July 1990, but the space it occupies has lived many lives — it was originally part of the Victorian Palace’s “Bazaar”, and over the years served as a concert hall, a rifle range and even a BBC production unit. Today it’s one of London’s best-loved rinks, open 364 days a year with sessions running from early morning figure skating right through to late-night ice hockey practice, and welcoming over 150,000 visits annually.
Public Skating, Lessons & Ice Discos
Public skating sessions run daily and skate hire is included in the experience — just book online in advance, as sessions can sell out at busy times. Children under 8 must be accompanied on the ice by an adult, and skate aids are available at the rink for little ones still finding their feet.
The Palace’s team of professional instructors teach skaters from age 2 to 90, from complete beginners through to national-level competitors — some of their students have gone on to perform in shows like Disney On Ice. And for something a bit different, the Saturday night ice discos with music and lights are brilliant fun for groups of friends.
Ice Hockey at Ally Pally
The rink is home to the Haringey Huskies ice hockey team, and since 2024 also to the Haringey Greyhounds — Ally Pally’s first ever women’s ice hockey team, who won both their league and cup in an incredible debut season. Catching a home game is a great-value night out with a proper big-match atmosphere.
Christmas at the Rink
The rink is magical at Christmas, with twinkling lights, festive music and a towering Christmas tree — plus the much-loved annual Ice Panto performed by homegrown talent. Warm up afterwards with a hot chocolate from the café.
Visiting Alexandra Palace Ice Rink
Alexandra Palace sits between Wood Green and Muswell Hill in North London, surrounded by acres of parkland with gorgeous views over the city — well worth a wander before or after your skate. The East Court car park is free to use (a small donation towards running costs is suggested), and Alexandra Palace station is a short walk through the park. The Palace is run by a charity for the benefit of everyone, so every visit helps support this wonderful building.
Book sessions online in advance and check the rink’s website for current session times before you travel.
