Kentchurch Court is a grand family home with a history spanning a thousand years. Located in the south of Herefordshire near the Welsh border, it’s a place for those who enjoy a slower pace, beautiful landscapes, and a bit of history without the “theme park” buzz.

• The Gardens: Spread across 20-25 acres, you can wander through formal walled gardens, a vegetable garden filled with the scent of roses, and a rhododendron wood that’s a highlight in the spring.
• The Deer Park: This former royal hunting ground is home to around 250 fallow deer and ancient trees. It’s a peaceful spot for a gentle stroll while watching the deer.
• House Tours: The house itself is a family home, so it’s only open for guided tours by appointment (usually for groups of five or more). You can see the Owain Glyndwr tower and learn about the family’s long history.
• Walking and Cycling: The estate is a great base for active visitors. A popular circular route takes you up Garway Hill for spectacular views, roughly a 7.5-mile trip around the deer park.

• Young Children: Kids are welcome and generally get in for free. The open spaces and deer are fun, but keep a close eye on them near the river that runs by the driveway.
• Teenagers: Unless they love historical architecture or quiet garden walks, they might find it a bit too peaceful. It’s more of an “interesting” visit than a “high-energy” one.
• Suitability: Best suited to garden lovers, history buffs, and those looking for a quiet rural escape. Most of the garden isn’t wheelchair accessible due to the natural terrain.
• Supervision: Children and pets need close supervision near the water and the driveway.

• Time Spent: Expect to spend about 1 to 2 hours if you’re just exploring the gardens, or longer if you’re tackling one of the local walks.
• Budget & Offers: Children usually get in for free. There’s often an honesty box for garden entry when the tea room is closed, so bringing cash is a good idea.
• Parking: There is parking opposite the church or in a designated area through the black gates on the back drive. If you have mobility issues, you can park in the first courtyard of the Court.
• Food & Drink: The on-site tea room is open seasonally (usually Monday to Friday). For a more substantial meal, The Bridge Inn is just a short walk away and offers a lovely riverside setting. For something unique, Under The Nut Tree nearby does outdoor fire-cooked meals on specific evenings.

Nearby Highlights
You can easily combine a visit here with a trip to the ruins of 

Grosmont Castle or Skenfrith Castle, both just a short drive away. If you’re after more action, the Viking Games nearby offers things like axe throwing and archery for those aged 11 and up.
