The Amazing Hedge Maze is tucked away in Symonds Yat West, right in the heart of the Wye Valley. It’s one of the few traditional hedge puzzles left in the UK and is famously tricky despite looking quite compact from the outside.
The Maze Experience
It’s a classic “Chepstow” style layout made of over two thousand yew trees. You can expect to spend about 30 to 45 minutes getting lost before eventually finding the temple at the centre. It’s a great spot for families because it’s entirely “hands-on” and physical.
For Kids: Younger children absolutely love it. It’s safe enough that parents can stand on the viewing platform, watch the kids scurry through the hedges, and shout out (often unhelpful) directions.
For Teenagers: They usually turn it into a race. It’s a great “phone-down” activity, though they’ll probably figure out the route faster than the adults.
The Vibe: It’s very relaxed. Because you can see over parts of the maze from the platform, it’s not claustrophobic. It’s more about the lighthearted frustration of hitting a dead end for the third time.
Practical Bits & Budget
Discounts: They are great for budget-conscious visitors. There are reduced rates for Seniors and Children, and they offer a very fair Family Ticket. If you have a Blue Light Card, it’s worth mentioning as they often provide a discount for emergency service workers.
Parking: There is a large car park on-site. While there is a fee, it is generally reasonable for the area.
Food: There is a small cafe on-site for basic snacks, but it can be a bit pricey for a full family meal. Most people bring a picnic or head to the nearby pubs.
Nearby Attractions & “The Combo”
The maze is quite short on its own, so it’s definitely best combined with other things in Symonds Yat to make the journey worth it. It’s literally right next to the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo and Miniature Golf, so you can easily spend half a day in this one specific corner.
If you want a full day out:
The River Wye: Walk down to the river (about 5 minutes away) to see the famous hand-pulled rope ferries.
The Saracens Head: A legendary riverside pub nearby for a proper lunch or a drink while watching the kayakers.
Yat Rock: A short drive (or a steep hike) up the hill for the best view in the county. If you’re already at the maze, you have to go to the Rock; seeing the maze from the valley and then the valley from the Rock completes the trip.
