Llanidloes is a small Mid Wales town that is easy to like.

It has a proper historic centre, independent shops and cafés, the River Severn running through it, and some of the best countryside in Mid Wales just beyond the town.

Start at the Old Market Hall

You cannot really miss the Old Market Hall. The black-and-white timber-framed building stands right in the centre of town and is one of Llanidloes’s best-known landmarks.

It dates from the early 17th century and immediately gives the town centre a sense of age and character.

From here, simply wander through the surrounding streets. Llanidloes is small enough that you can explore without constantly checking a map.

The town has plenty of small independent businesses rather than feeling dominated by the usual national chains.

You can browse bookshops, food shops, clothing, gifts and other local businesses, then stop at one of the cafés or pubs around the centre.

It is the sort of place where the wandering is part of the visit rather than something you rush through between attractions.

Follow the River Severn

Llanidloes has a special connection with the River Severn because it is the first town on the river after its journey down from the Cambrian Mountains.

Riverside paths give you an easy way to stretch your legs without heading onto the higher hills.

If you enjoy walking, Llanidloes is also closely connected with longer routes following the Severn and the surrounding countryside.

Visit the Minerva Arts Centre

The Minerva Arts Centre gives Llanidloes another dimension, particularly if you are interested in textiles, quilting and crafts.

Exhibitions change through the year and often feature colourful quilts, textile work and contemporary crafts.

It is a useful indoor stop too, especially if Mid Wales decides to provide one of its wetter afternoons.

Discover the Town’s Story

Llanidloes has more history than its size suggests.

It grew around wool and textile production and later became closely associated with the Chartist movement, when local people joined the campaign for political reform during the 19th century.

The local museum is worth a look if you want to understand more about the town’s industries, people and changing way of life.

Use Llanidloes as a Base

This is another Mid Wales town where the surrounding countryside adds enormously to its appeal.

Hafren Forest is nearby, Llyn Clywedog is only a short drive away, and the Cambrian Mountains begin almost on the doorstep.

That makes Llanidloes particularly good for visitors who want walking, cycling and scenic drives during the day but still want somewhere with shops, cafés and pubs to come back to afterwards.

A Few Useful Tips

Llanidloes is compact and easy to explore on foot once you are in the town centre.

Allow a couple of hours if you simply want to wander around, browse the shops and stop for something to eat. You can easily turn it into a full day by adding Hafren Forest or Llyn Clywedog.

The Minerva Arts Centre and local museum have their own opening schedules, so check current opening days if either is important to your visit.

There are cafés, pubs, food shops and everyday services in the town, making Llanidloes a useful place to stock up before heading into the Cambrian Mountains.
