Newtown – Powys

Newtown is one of the larger towns in Mid Wales, but it still feels easy to explore on foot.

The River Severn runs through the centre, there are museums and galleries to dip into, and the town has enough shops, cafés and everyday facilities to make it a useful base as well as somewhere worth visiting in its own right.

Start in the Town Centre

Newtown is a good place to simply have a wander.

There are independent shops mixed with familiar high-street names, cafés, restaurants and plenty of places to stop for a break.

The centre is compact enough that you can combine shopping with the museums and riverside without constantly moving the car.

Discover Robert Owen’s Story

Newtown was the birthplace of Robert Owen, one of the most influential social reformers of the 19th century.

The free Robert Owen Museum tells the story of his life, his work at New Lanark and the ideas that helped inspire the cooperative movement.

A short Robert Owen Trail starts near the museum and takes you past places connected with his life, including his memorial and grave.

See Newtown’s Textile History

The Newtown Textile Museum is one of the most interesting places in town if you want to understand how Newtown grew.

It is housed in an original hand-loom weaving factory and tells the story of wool, weaving and the families who worked in the local textile industry.

The museum has plenty of original machinery, displays and domestic details, so it feels more personal than a simple collection of old photographs.

Visit Oriel Davies Gallery

For something completely different, Oriel Davies brings contemporary art into the middle of town.

The exhibitions change through the year, so there is usually something new to see even if you have visited Newtown before.

It is also a useful wet-weather option and sits close to The Park, so you can easily combine an indoor visit with a walk outside when the weather improves.

Walk Beside the River Severn

The River Severn gives Newtown a much greener feel than you might expect from the town centre.

Riverside paths and open spaces make it easy to escape the shops for a while, and several local walking routes start close to the centre.

If you want something longer, the canal route towards Welshpool is popular with walkers and cyclists and gives you a traffic-free way to head out into the surrounding countryside.

Spend Some Time in The Park

The Park sits close to the centre and is handy if you are visiting with children or simply want somewhere open and green to sit for a while.

There are play areas and plenty of space, making it easy to break up a museum or shopping day without having to drive elsewhere.

A Few Useful Tips

Newtown is one of the easier Mid Wales towns to visit without a car because it has a railway station and regular bus services.

The Robert Owen Museum is currently open on weekdays from 11am to 3pm and admission is free.

The Newtown Textile Museum is seasonal and is open during the warmer months, so check current dates before making a special journey.

The Robert Owen Trail is only around half a mile and takes roughly 20 minutes, making it easy to add to a museum visit.

There are plenty of cafés, restaurants, shops and everyday facilities around the centre, so Newtown also works well as a practical base for exploring this part of Mid Wales.
