Exeter Racecourse

Exeter Racecourse is the highest racecourse in the UK, sitting 850 feet above sea level on the Haldon Hills. It is a premier National Hunt (jump) racing venue known for its challenging, undulating track and stunning views over the Devon countryside and Dartmoor.

Location & Access
Where: It is located on Haldon Hill, approximately 10 miles from Exeter city centre, right off the A38 Devon Expressway.
Getting There:
By Car: It is about 5 miles from the end of the M5 southbound. Free parking is available on-site.
By Public Transport: A free shuttle bus typically runs from Exeter St David’s Train Station on racedays. The Stagecoach 39 bus also stops directly outside the course.

What to See & Do
The Racing: Experience elite jump racing, featuring hurdles and steeplechases. Major fixtures include the Haldon Gold Cup (November) and the Devon National (February).
Behind the Scenes: Guided tours are often available, taking you to the Weighing Room, the Pre-Parade Ring, and out for a Course Walk.
Dining: Enjoy panoramic views from the Desert Orchid Restaurant in the Haldon Stand, or visit various bars like AP’s Bar for casual food and drinks.
Events: Beyond racing, the venue hosts conferences, weddings, and themed days like Ladies Night and Family Racedays.

Who Should Go & When
Families: Great for all ages; under-18s go free when accompanied by a paying adult.
Enthusiasts: Ideal for those wanting to see future champions; legends like Best Mate and Desert Orchid made their winning debuts here.
Season: Racing typically takes place from October to May.

What Makes it Unique?
Elevation: Its height (260m) makes it the highest track in Britain, offering a uniquely “testing” uphill finish that challenges a horse’s stamina.
History: Racing here dates back 350 years to the reign of Charles II. It was also the site of the last duel in Devon in 1833.
Fairness: It is widely regarded by trainers as one of the “fairest” tracks in the country due to its wide, galloping nature.
