Builth Wells

Builth Wells is one of the livelier small towns in Mid Wales and makes a good stop whether you are staying locally or simply passing through.

The River Wye runs beside the town, there are riverside walks, cafés and independent shops, a theatre and cinema, local history to discover and the famous Royal Welsh Showground just across the river.

Walk Beside the River Wye

One of the nicest parts of Builth Wells is The Groe, the large riverside open space beside the Wye.

It is an easy place for a stroll, picnic or simply a break from driving, with plenty of grass and views across the river.

The riverside setting gives Builth a more relaxed feel than you might expect from a busy market town.

Good for a relaxed stop: Park up, have a wander through town, walk beside the Wye and stop for lunch without needing a complicated itinerary.

Explore the Town Centre

The centre is compact and has a good mix of independent shops, cafés, pubs and everyday services.

Builth Wells feels like a proper working town rather than somewhere built purely for visitors, which is part of its appeal.

Take time to look at the older buildings and streets rather than simply using it as somewhere to stop for supplies.

Discover the Local History

Builth has a much longer story than its Victorian spa-town name might suggest.

Behind Castle Road you can still find the grassy earthworks of Builth Castle, once an important medieval fortress overlooking the Wye.

There is not a large stone castle to explore today, but the site is still worth finding if you enjoy medieval history.

The Builth Wells Tourist Information and Heritage Centre on the High Street is also useful for local photographs, documents and information about the area.

See What Is On at Wyeside

Wyeside Arts Centre gives Builth a very useful indoor attraction.

The programme includes cinema, theatre, live music and other performances, making it particularly handy when the weather turns wet or you want something to do in the evening.

If you are staying in the area for a few days, it is worth checking the programme rather than assuming everything happens outdoors.

Visit During the Royal Welsh Show

Just across the river at Llanelwedd is the Royal Welsh Showground, home of the Royal Welsh Show.

The annual show is one of the biggest agricultural events in Britain, with livestock, food, countryside displays, shopping and entertainment attracting huge crowds.

Other events take place at the showground during the year too, so it is worth checking what is happening while you are in the area.

If your visit coincides with the Royal Welsh Show, expect Builth Wells itself to be extremely busy.

Use Builth as a Base

Builth sits in a useful central position for exploring this part of Wales.

Llandrindod Wells, Llanwrtyd Wells, Rhayader and the Elan Valley are all within reach, while the Wye Valley gives you plenty of countryside for walking and scenic drives.

That makes the town a practical choice if you want somewhere with proper shops and places to eat while still being close to quieter rural areas.

A Few Useful Tips

Builth Wells is easy to explore on foot once you are in the centre, and The Groe gives you a convenient green space right beside the town.

The Tourist Information and Heritage Centre is currently on High Street, Builth Wells LD2 3DN and is generally open during daytime hours from Monday to Saturday.

Wyeside Arts Centre has a changing programme, so check what is on if you want cinema, theatre or live entertainment during your stay.

If you are visiting during a major event at the Royal Welsh Showground, allow extra time for traffic and parking.

For a normal visit, a couple of hours is enough for the town and riverside. Add an event, performance or longer walk and you can easily make a day of it.
