Go Ape – Buxton

Go Ape Buxton is an adrenaline-fuelled high ropes course located in the heart of the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire. It is famous for being one of the highest Go Ape courses in the UK, built into the hilltops of Buxton Country Park, offering stunning views of the spa town and surrounding countryside.

The Main Event: Treetop Challenge

The star attraction here is the Treetop Challenge, a self-guided journey through the forest canopy that typically takes 2 to 3 hours. You’ll navigate rope ladders, wobbly bridges, and aerial crossings.

  • Tarzan Swings: Expect some of the biggest drops in the country, where you leap from a platform into a giant cargo net.
  • Zip Wires: There are 8 epic zip wires, including a 159-metre flight that provides a massive rush.

Who is it for?

This specific site is not for the little ones. Unlike many other Go Ape locations, Buxton focuses on the more extreme end of the scale and does not have the entry-level “Treetop Adventure” or “Adventure Plus” courses for younger children.

  • Minimum Age: 10 years old.
  • Height Requirement: Participants must be at least 1.4 metres (4ft 7in) tall.
  • Suitability: It is perfect for adventurous teenagers and adults. While older kids who meet the height limit will love the challenge, those with a serious fear of heights might find it quite intense.
  • Supervision: Children aged 10–15 need a participating adult with them (one adult can supervise up to two children). 16 and 17-year-olds can supervise themselves but cannot supervise younger kids.

Practical Tips for Families & Groups

  • Budget & Savings: Look out for the FAMILY20 offer which can save you 20% on bookings. They also typically offer discounts for Blue Light Card holders and students.
  • What to Wear: You will get muddy, especially on the zip wire landings. Wear old, comfortable clothes and sturdy footwear like hiking boots or trainers with good grip. Bringing your own gloves is a smart move to save buying them at the cabin.
  • Parking: There is on-site parking at the Poole’s Cavern car park. It is a pay-and-display system, though Blue Badge holders can park for free.
  • Food: There is a cafe at the nearby Poole’s Cavern entrance for snacks and hot drinks, and a dedicated picnic area if you want to bring your own supplies to keep costs down.

Make a Day of It

Since the course takes a few hours, you can easily combine it with other local gems located right on the same site:

  • Poole’s Cavern: A spectacular natural limestone cave located just across the car park.
  • Solomon’s Temple: A short, steep walk from the car park leads to this landmark tower. The trail is roughly circular and offers incredible panoramic views of the Peak District.
  • Buxton Town: A short walk or drive takes you into the historic spa town for a more relaxed afternoon exploring the Pavilion Gardens or the Crescent.
