Conkers – Leicestershire

Conkers is located in the heart of the National Forest in Leicestershire. It’s a massive mix of indoor and outdoor adventure that genuinely hits the mark for a full family day out.

What’s the Vibe?

Expect to spend at least 4 to 5 hours here, though many families easily make a full day of it. It’s split into two main areas—Discovery and Waterside—connected by a cute narrow-gauge steam train that runs between them.

For the Kids (and the Brave)

  • Outdoor Adventure: There is a huge Discovery Forest with play areas, but the standout is the Activity Trail. It’s an obstacle course with zip wires and climbing frames that will definitely tire out energetic kids and teens.
  • The Barefoot Walk: This is exactly what it sounds like—you walk through mud, water, and various textures without shoes. It’s a hit with younger children and toddlers, though teenagers might need some coaxing to get their feet dirty!
  • Indoor Fun: If the weather turns, the indoor centre has an Enchanted Forest adventure play area and a 4D Cinema. There’s also an interactive forest floor which is great for toddlers to crawl around on.
  • High Ropes: For an extra challenge, there’s a Vertigo Adventure climbing wall and high ropes course. Height restrictions apply here: you usually need to be at least 1.2 metres tall.

For Teens and Adults

Teenagers who like being active will enjoy the outdoor trails and the high ropes, but if they aren’t into “outdoorsy” stuff, they might find the educational exhibits a bit slow. For adults, it’s more of an interesting walk through the woodland and sensory gardens rather than high-octane entertainment, but it’s a very pleasant environment.

Parenting Reality Check

  • Supervision: While the play areas are contained, the site is vast with water features and woodland trails, so younger children will need close supervision. It’s not really a “sit back and let them run” kind of place except in the specific gated play zones.
  • Food & Drink: There are onsite restaurants and cafes at both main hubs, but they can be a bit pricey. Many people choose to bring a picnic to eat at the various outdoor tables to save some cash.
  • Parking: Good news here—parking is free and there is plenty of it.

Money Matters & Planning

  • Discounts: Look out for Blue Light Card discounts or Senior rates. If you live nearby, the Annual Membership is a solid investment because it often pays for itself in just a few visits.
  • Combine your trip: If you want to make a weekend of it, the Moira Furnace Museum is right next door. It’s a historic iron-making site with lovely canal-side walks that are much quieter than the main Conkers hubs.
