Speedwell Cavern

Speedwell Cavern is a unique underground experience in Castleton, Derbyshire, that takes you deep into an 18th-century lead mine via an electric boat. It is a major attraction in the Peak District, famous for its “Bottomless Pit,” a massive natural subterranean lake.

The Experience

• Boat Journey: Your visit starts by descending 106 steep steps to an underground canal. From there, you board a boat for a guided tour through narrow, dimly lit tunnels.
• The Big Reveal: The journey opens up into a vast, cathedral-like cavern featuring the Bottomless Pit and remnants of the original mining equipment.
• What to Expect: Guides share stories of the miners who hand-drilled these tunnels over 200 years ago. Be prepared for some “dad jokes” and narrow spaces—you’ll definitely need to watch your head!

Note that toilets are located in the car park and require a small fee/token from the gift shop.
