Located in Derbyshire, the Swadlincote Ski and Snowboard Centre is a solid shout for an active day out, especially if you fancy a bit of “mountain” action without leaving the Midlands.
What’s the Vibe?
It’s an outdoor dry ski slope, meaning you’re sliding on Perma-snow (brushes) rather than the real fluffy stuff. It’s perfect for high-energy families and groups of friends.
Things to Do
Skiing & Snowboarding: You can book open practice if you’re already confident or grab lessons if you’re a total newbie.
Tobogganing: This is the big crowd-pleaser. You ride a tray down a twisty 500m track. It’s fast, fun, and usually the highlight for most.
Sno-tubing: Essentially sliding down the hill in a massive inflatable doughnut. It’s bouncy, chaotic, and great for a laugh.
Age & Height Rules
Tobogganing: Kids need to be 4 years old to ride with an adult (8+ to go solo).
Sno-tubing: Usually for ages 4 and up.
Skiing: Lessons generally start from age 4, while snowboarding usually starts around 7 or 8.
Who is it for?
Young Kids: They’ll love the tubing and toboggans, but they need constant supervision and an adult to ride with them on the track.
Teenagers: This is one of the few places where teenagers won’t be bored. It’s fast-paced enough to keep them off their phones.
Parents: You can’t really “drop and run” with younger kids here, but once they are on the slopes, you can watch from the bar/restaurant area. It’s more about joining in than sitting back.
Planning Your Time
Most people spend about 2 to 3 hours here. If you’re just doing a few toboggan runs, you’ll be done sooner, but a tubing session followed by lunch makes for a good half-day trip.
Budget & Saving Tips
Discounts: They often have deals for Blue Light Card holders and Active Nation members.
Group Rates: If you’re coming with a big crew, check for group booking rates which are usually much cheaper per person.
Off-Peak: Aim for mid-week if you can; it’s often quieter and sometimes cheaper.
Parking: Good news—parking is free on-site.
Food & Nearby Extras
There’s an on-site bar and restaurant for the standard burgers and chips, which is okay, but if you want something different, you’re right on the edge of Swadlincote town centre where there are plenty of high-street eateries.
For a “mega-day,” you could combine this with a visit to Conkers (a massive outdoor forest adventure park) or Rosliston Forestry Centre, both of which are just a short drive away in the heart of the National Forest.
