International Bomber Command Centre

The International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC) is located on Canwick Hill in Lincolnshire, overlooking the city of Lincoln and its famous cathedral. It’s a powerful, world-class memorial and museum dedicated to the hundreds of thousands of men and women who served or supported Bomber Command during WWII.

What’s there to do?

The site is split between a striking outdoor memorial and an indoor “Hub.” Outside, you’ll find the Spire, which is the UK’s tallest war memorial, surrounded by walls of names. There are also two Peace Gardens to wander through. Inside, the exhibition is incredibly high-tech and immersive—it’s not just dusty cabinets; it uses first-hand accounts and interactive displays to tell the human stories of the aircrews and the civilians on the ground.

Who is it for?

• Families: It’s better for older children and teenagers. While there are some interactive elements, it’s a place of reflection and history.
• Young Kids: Very small children might find the exhibition a bit heavy, though they’ll enjoy running around the outdoor gardens.
• Supervision: Children need to be supervised; it’s a memorial site, so it’s not the place for “running wild” while parents relax.
• Interest vs. Entertainment: This is definitely an interesting and educational experience rather than a “fun-fair” style attraction. It’s best suited to history buffs or those with a family connection to the RAF.

How long should we stay?

Most visitors spend about 3 to 4 hours here if they want to properly take in the exhibition and walk the grounds.

• Annual Pass: They often run a “pay for a day, get a year free” scheme (Gift Aid), which makes a return visit great value if you live nearby.
• Parking & Food: There is a large car park on-site which is generally inexpensive. The Hub Café is well-regarded for its food and isn’t overly priced for a visitor centre.

Nearby Perks

Since you’re on the edge of Lincoln, you can easily combine this with a trip into the city centre to see Lincoln Cathedral and the Castle. If you want a bit of fresh air afterward, the Lincolnshire Wolds are a short drive away for a walk to clear the head after the emotional weight of the memorial.
