Tattershall Castle

Tattershall Castle in Lincolnshire is a massive 15th-century red-brick tower that sticks out like a sore thumb against the flat Fenland landscape. It’s essentially a “show-off” castle built by Lord Cromwell to prove how wealthy he was, so if you like grand architecture without the usual damp, crumbling stone, this is your spot.

What to do there
You can climb the spiral staircase all the way to the battlements. There are four floors to explore, filled with huge gothic fireplaces and tapestries. The view from the top is the real prize—you can see for miles over the countryside. Outside, there’s a moat (complete with ducks to feed) and some ruins of the outer walls to wander through.

Who will love it (and who won’t)

  • Kids: Great for a game of hide-and-seek or pretending to be a knight. There’s usually a trail or a backpack of activities to keep them busy. It’s “hands-off” in the sense that you need to watch them on the steep stairs, but they can run around the grounds.
  • Teenagers: Unless they are into history or want a “moody” photo for social media from the roof, they might find it a bit repetitive after the second floor.
  • Parents: You won’t exactly get a “break” because you’ll be climbing behind the kids, but the grounds are enclosed and safe once you’re back on the grass.

The Practical Bits

  • Time: Expect to spend about 2 to 3 hours here.
  • Budget & Discounts: It is a National Trust site. If you have a membership, it’s “free”; otherwise, it can be a bit pricey for a family. They offer family tickets and discounts for one-adult families.
  • Food & Parking: Parking is free and right on-site. There isn’t a full-blown restaurant inside the castle, but there is a small shop for snacks and hot drinks. Most people bring a picnic to eat on the grass by the moat.

Nearby Add-ons
Since the castle won’t take up your whole day, you can walk literally next door to Holy Trinity Church, which is huge and famous for its medieval stained glass. Just down the road is Tattershall Farm Park, which is a massive hit for younger kids with animals and soft play. If you’re into planes, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is nearby in Coningsby—you’ll often see (and definitely hear) Spitfires or Lancasters flying overhead.
