Lincoln Castle

Lincoln Castle is a heavy-hitter for history buffs and families alike. Perched right in the heart of Lincoln, Lincolnshire, it sits directly across from the cathedral, making it super easy to find.

What’s the vibe?

This isn’t just a pile of old stones; it’s a massive, lived-in space where you can actually get stuck in. The standout feature is the Medieval Wall Walk. You can walk the entire circumference of the high curtain walls, which gives you some of the best views of the city and the cathedral you’ll ever get.

Inside the grounds, there’s the Victorian Prison. It’s a bit eerie but fascinating—you can explore the cells and the “separate system” chapel where prisoners were kept in individual stalls so they couldn’t see or speak to each other. It’s definitely more “interesting” than “playful,” but the storytelling is top-notch.

You’ll also find the Magna Carta vault. It’s one of only four surviving originals from 1215. It’s a “look but don’t touch” experience, but seeing a document that changed the world is a pretty cool “I was there” moment.

Who is it for?

  • Young Kids: They’ll love the wide-open grassy spaces inside the walls to run around. The wall walk is safe (high railings), but there are lots of steep stone steps, so keep a close eye on them.
  • Teenagers: Might find the prison cells “cool” or “creepy,” which is usually a win. The wall walk is great for photos, but if they aren’t into history, they might get restless after an hour.
  • Parents: This is a “hands-on” supervising job rather than a “sit back and relax” one. You’ll be doing a lot of walking and climbing stairs with the kids.

Practical Bits

  • Timing: Expect to spend about 3 to 4 hours here if you want to do the walls, the prison, and see the Magna Carta properly.
  • Budget & Discounts: While the grounds are often free to enter for a stroll, you need a ticket for the attractions. Look out for concession prices for seniors and students. They often offer a Family Ticket which saves a fair bit. If you live nearby, the Annual Pass is a massive bargain because it usually pays for itself in just two visits.
  • Food & Parking: There is a small café on-site, but it can be pricey. Since you’re in the Bailgate area, you are surrounded by brilliant independent tea rooms, pubs, and fudge shops. Parking in uphill Lincoln is notoriously difficult and expensive; try to use the Park & Ride or be prepared to hunt for a spot in the multi-storeys downhill and walk up the (very) Steep Hill.

Nearby Add-ons

You are literally steps away from Lincoln Cathedral. You can easily combine the two for a full “heritage” day out. If you need a break from history, the Bailgate shopping area is right outside the gates with lovely boutiques and places to grab a pint or a coffee.
