Chester Zoo

Chester Zoo is located in Cheshire and is widely considered one of the best wildlife experiences in the country. It’s massive, so you’ll need a full day here; most families arrive when the gates open and still find themselves rushing to see the last few animals before heading home.

What to Expect

This isn’t a “look through the glass” kind of place; it’s immersive. You can wander through the monsoon forest, walk among butterflies, or take a boat trip on the Lazy River in the Islands zone, which gives you a unique view of the habitats. The bats in the darkened twilight zone are a highlight, flying right past your head, though it can be a bit spooky for very young kids.

Is it for Everyone?

  • Toddlers & Young Kids: They’ll love it. The zoo is very stroller-friendly, and there are massive, high-quality play areas that aren’t just an afterthought—they are destinations in themselves.
  • Teens: Usually hard to please, but the scale of the predators (lions, tigers, and cheetahs) and the massive elephant herd generally keep them off their phones.
  • Adults: Even without kids, it’s a great day out because of the incredible botanical gardens and the focus on conservation. It feels more like a nature reserve than a traditional zoo.

Planning Your Time

You will be doing a lot of walking. The site is spread out, so wear comfortable shoes. If you want a break, the monorail used to be the go-to, but the boat trip in the Islands area is now the best way to see things without being on your feet. Parents can get a bit of a breather at the various play zones where kids can run wild in a secure environment, but because of the water features and large crowds, you’ll still need to keep a close eye on the little ones.

Food & Nearby Perks

Food inside can be pricey, especially at the main cafes, though the The Oakfield (a contemporary pub located right inside the zoo) is a much nicer experience than standard “fast food” counters. Many people bring a picnic to save money, as there are plenty of spots to sit.

If you have energy left after the zoo, Chester city centre is just a short drive away with its famous Roman Walls and “The Rows” shopping galleries. For those looking for more activity, Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet is nearby for shopping or a massive cinema and bowling complex if the weather turns.

Getting In & Savings

  • Discounts: They often offer better rates for seniors and students. If you have a Blue Light Card, it’s worth checking for specific promotional days.
  • Memberships: If you live within an hour’s drive, annual membership pays for itself in about three visits and is a massive hit with families who want to pop in for just a few hours at a time.
  • Parking: There is a huge amount of on-site parking, and it is completely free, which is a nice bonus compared to city-centre attractions.
