Peckforton Castle

Peckforton Castle is located in Cheshire, perched high on a hill within the Beeston area. While it looks like a medieval fortress, it’s actually a Victorian country house built to look like a castle.

What to Expect

Today, it functions primarily as a luxury hotel and wedding venue. If you aren’t staying there or attending an event, it’s the kind of place where you might pop in for Afternoon Tea or a meal. Most visitors spend 1 to 2 hours here if they are just exploring the grounds and grabbing a coffee, or longer if booking an activity.

Things to Do

• Land Rover Experience: This is the big draw for thrill-seekers. You can take a vehicle off-road through the rugged woodland trails surrounding the castle.
• Falconry: There is an on-site falconry centre where you can get up close with owls, hawks, and falcons.
• The Architecture: It’s genuinely impressive to walk through the massive stone archways and vaulted ceilings. It feels like a movie set (and has been used for several).

Family & Age Suitability

• Adults: This is the primary target group. It’s high-end, atmospheric, and great for a romantic wander or a posh lunch.
• Teens: They will likely find the building cool for a few photos, but unless they are doing the off-road driving (age/licence restrictions apply) or falconry, they might get restless quickly.
• Young Children: There isn’t a traditional playground here. While kids might enjoy the “castle” vibe, it’s a sophisticated environment where they’ll need close supervision due to the heavy doors, stone stairs, and the fact that it is a working hotel. It’s not a place where parents can “switch off” while kids run wild.

• Parking: There is on-site parking, which is generally straightforward for guests and visitors using the facilities.
• Food & Drink: Dining inside the castle (like the 1851 Restaurant) is a “treat” experience—expect higher prices. For something more casual, the 2010 Brasserie is a bit more relaxed.
• Nearby Bonus: You can easily pair this with a trip to Beeston Castle, which is right across the valley. Beeston is a “real” medieval ruin with more space for kids to scramble around. The Sandstone Trail also runs nearby, perfect if you want to add a proper hike to your day.
