Muncaster Castle

Muncaster Castle is a stunning, supposedly haunted estate in Ravenglass, Cumbria (CA18 1RQ). It’s one of those rare spots where history feels alive, mostly because the Pennington family has lived there for over 800 years. It’s a fantastic day out for families and explorers who love a mix of grand architecture, quirky history, and wild nature.

What’s the fun stuff?
The big draw here—aside from the castle itself—is the Hawk & Owl Centre. They put on world-class flying displays, and watching a massive owl or a speedy falcon zip right over your head is a genuine thrill. Usually, there’s a heron feed in the afternoon too, which is quite a sight as dozens of wild birds swoop in.

If you’re visiting with kids, they’ll likely spend most of their time in the Enchanted Garden. It’s a massive woodland play area with a giant “MeadowVibe” maze and plenty of space to run wild. For the brave, the castle is famous for its ghosts; even if you don’t spot the “Tom Fool” jester, the audio tour of the grand rooms is full of cheeky stories rather than dry dates.

Planning your day

  • Time spent: You can easily spend 4 to 5 hours here. If you include a long walk through the Himalayan Gardens and stay for the bird displays, it’s a full-day job.
  • Budgeting: To save some pennies, it is definitely worth looking for early bird tickets online before you go, as they are often cheaper than paying at the gate. If you live nearby or plan to return, their annual membership pays for itself in just a few visits.
  • Food & Drink: There is a café on-site, but like many big attractions, it can add up for a large family. Many visitors recommend bringing a picnic—there are loads of scenic spots with incredible views of the Lakeland fells to enjoy your sandwiches.
  • Parking: Parking is available on-site and is generally straightforward.

Nearby Gems
If you want to make a weekend of it, the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (known locally as the La’al Ratty) is just down the road. It’s a narrow-gauge steam train that takes you into the heart of the mountains. You can actually buy joint tickets for the castle and the train, which is a great way to bundle the fun and save some cash.

Visitor Tips
Wear comfortable shoes! The gardens are beautiful but very hilly and spread out. Also, some regular visitors mention that the bird displays can be affected by high winds, so try to pick a clear day to get the most out of the experience.
