Look Out Discovery Centre

The Look Out Discovery Centre is a hands-on science and nature attraction located in Bracknell, Berkshire, nestled right in the heart of the Crown Estate’s Swinley Forest.

What to Expect

It is essentially a massive science playground designed to make learning feel like a game. The main hall is split into different zones—such as Water, Light, and Forces—where visitors can:

  • Launch a hydrogen rocket.
  • Build a sturdy house with giant foam bricks using a working crane.
  • Experiment with a massive indoor water table and dam system.
  • Step inside a giant bubble.

Outside, the experience shifts to the forest, featuring one of the largest wooden adventure play areas in the region and miles of trails for walking and cycling.

Duration & Best Audience

Most families spend about 2 to 3 hours inside the science discovery zone, but if you include the forest trails and the outdoor playground, it easily becomes a full-day outing.

It is perfectly suited for primary school-aged children (ages 4–11). The “learn by doing” approach keeps them engaged and active. Very young toddlers might enjoy the water play and soft-build areas, though older teenagers or adults without children might find the indoor exhibits a bit basic and could be bored unless they are specifically there for the mountain biking trails in the forest.

Timing Your Visit

If you prefer a quieter experience, try visiting on a weekday afternoon during term time. For the most “fun” atmosphere, weekends and school holidays are buzzing, though the science zone can get loud. Because a huge part of the appeal is the forest and the massive outdoor park, it is best enjoyed on dry, sunny days, though the indoor discovery centre is a perfect “rainy day” backup.

Unique Features

What makes it different is its location. It isn’t just a museum; it’s an integrated indoor-outdoor experience where you can move from a physics experiment to a high-speed mountain bike trail or a quiet forest walk in seconds.

Budget & Value

The outdoor playground and forest trails are free to access (aside from parking charges), making it a very cost-effective day out if you skip the indoor science zone. For the discovery centre itself:

  • Annual Passes: These are highly recommended for local families. Visiting just three or four times a year usually covers the cost of the pass.
  • Group Discounts: There are often reduced rates for families or larger groups.
  • Professional Discounts: It is worth checking for “Blue Light” or similar service worker discounts at the reception, as these are common for local council-run attractions.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Clothing: Wear sturdy trainers or boots. Even if you stay indoors, the surrounding forest can get muddy, and you’ll want to explore the playground.
  • Food: There is an on-site cafe, but there are plenty of picnic tables under the trees. Bringing your own lunch is a great way to save money.
  • Water Play: If you have young children, bringing a spare change of clothes is wise—the water exhibits are very popular and kids often get splashed!

Nearby Enhancements

Directly across the road is Coral Reef Waterworld, a massive water park with slides. Combining the two makes for an “ultimate” kids’ day out. For a more relaxed meal, the nearby town of Bracknell (a short drive away) offers a wide variety of restaurants and bars at The Lexicon shopping centre.

Important Note

The Discovery Centre often runs themed science shows in a separate small theatre. These change every few months and are worth the small extra fee for the live demonstrations and “explosions” that usually captivate the kids.
