Dunvegan Castle & Gardens

Dunvegan Castle is one of the best places on Skye to combine history, gardens and wildlife in the same visit.

Standing above Loch Dunvegan, it has been the ancestral home of the Chiefs of Clan MacLeod for centuries and is still filled with family history, portraits and treasured objects.

Inside, Dunvegan feels very different from a ruined fortress.

The rooms contain family portraits, furniture, historic objects and displays connected with generations of Clan MacLeod.

The building itself has changed many times over the centuries, so you are seeing layers of Highland history rather than one untouched medieval castle.

See the Fairy Flag

One of Dunvegan’s most famous treasures is the Fairy Flag of Clan MacLeod.

The fragile silk flag is surrounded by centuries of legend, with stories claiming that it possessed protective powers and could be used to save the clan in times of danger.

Its true origins are much older and more mysterious than the legends suggest, which makes it one of the most intriguing objects in the castle.

Wander Through the Gardens

The gardens are substantial enough to be an attraction in their own right.

You can move between very different areas, including the Water Garden, formal Round Garden and the large Walled Garden.

The sheltered setting allows an impressive variety of plants to grow despite Skye’s exposed climate.

Take Your Time in the Walled Garden

The Walled Garden is particularly worth seeking out rather than treating it as somewhere to walk through quickly.

It includes colourful planting, a water-lily pond, pergola, glasshouse and traditional raised vegetable beds that reflect the garden’s original role in supplying food to the castle.

There is also a small Garden Museum and several unusual features hidden among the planting.

Take a Boat Trip to See the Seals

One of Dunvegan’s best extras is the chance to head out onto Loch Dunvegan.

Traditional open boats leave from the jetty below the castle for short trips towards the local seal colony.

The trip takes around 25 minutes and can bring you surprisingly close to common seals, with opportunities to see seabirds and other wildlife as well.

It is particularly good for families and adds something completely different to the castle-and-gardens visit.

Enjoy the Loch Views

Even if you do not take a boat trip, the setting beside Loch Dunvegan is a major part of the visit.

Paths around the gardens and castle give you different views across the water and surrounding Skye landscape.

On a clear day, it is worth slowing down and enjoying the setting rather than treating the visit as a checklist of rooms and gardens.

Stop at the Café

MacLeod Tables Café is beside the castle car park and gives you somewhere convenient for drinks, cakes and hot food.

That makes it easy to spend several hours at Dunvegan without needing to leave the estate for lunch.

A Few Useful Tips

Dunvegan Castle & Gardens is at Dunvegan, Isle of Skye IV55 8WF.

For the 2026 season, the castle and gardens are open daily from 1 April to 15 October.

Current opening hours are 10am to 5.30pm, with last admission at 5pm.

Allow around two to three hours for the castle and gardens. Add extra time if you want to take a seal boat trip or have a relaxed meal.

Seal trips currently operate from 1 April to 30 September, generally between 10am and 4.30pm. They run on a first-come, first-served basis and depend on capacity, sea and weather conditions.

Free visitor parking is available during opening hours.

The gardens have improved accessible paths, but access inside the historic castle is much more limited. There is currently no fully step-free route through the main castle visitor areas, so check the detailed accessibility information before travelling if stairs are a problem.

Skye weather can change quickly, so take a waterproof layer even if the forecast looks reasonable when you leave your accommodation.
