Hayling Island

Hayling Island is a compact, four-mile-square island off the south coast of Hampshire, England, situated between the cities of Portsmouth and Chichester. It is a “true island” completely surrounded by sea, connected to the mainland at Langstone by a single road bridge.

What You Can Do
Water Sports: As the birthplace of windsurfing (invented here in 1958), the island is a mecca for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and sailing.
Beaches: Relax on over three miles of coastline, including the Blue Flag-awarded West Beach, which features clear water and safe swimming conditions.
Nature & Wildlife: Spot seals in Chichester Harbour or visit the Hayling Island Oysterbeds to see various seabirds like oystercatchers and egrets.
Family Fun: Ride the Hayling Seaside Railway, a miniature train along the coast, or visit Funland Amusement Park for traditional rides and arcades.
History & Trails: Walk or cycle the Hayling Billy Trail, a five-mile path on a former railway line. You can also explore the World War II Heritage Trail to see remains of military installations.

Who Should Go and When
Families & Outdoor Enthusiasts: It is ideal for those seeking a traditional British seaside holiday without the heavy crowds of more commercial resorts.
Best Time to Visit: June to September is peak season for warm beach weather and water sports. Spring (April-June) and Autumn (September-November) offer mild weather with fewer crowds, perfect for cycling and birdwatching.
Pro Tip: If visiting on a hot summer weekend, arrive before 9:00 AM to secure parking and avoid heavy traffic on the single bridge onto the island.

What Makes It Unique
Microclimate: The island enjoys a unique microclimate with more sunshine hours than many other UK locations and generally milder winters.
Birthplace of Windsurfing: It holds a significant place in sporting history as the site where Peter Chilvers developed the first sailboard.
Ancient History: It is home to one of the oldest yew trees in England (estimated up to 2,000 years old) at St Mary’s Church and the grave of a Russian Princess (Catherine Yourievsky) at St Peter’s.

Benefits of Visiting
Health & Wellbeing: The “Hayling Microclimate” and high air quality offer a refreshing retreat for those wanting to escape urban pollution.
Accessible Adventure: The flat terrain makes the entire island easy to explore on foot or by bicycle for people of all ages and abilities.
Local Produce: You can visit Stoke Fruit Farm for fresh Hayling tomatoes and honey, or Northney Farm for ice cream made from their own dairy herd.
