Runcorn Ski & Snowboard Centre

Located in Runcorn, Cheshire, this centre is a great spot if you’re looking to get active outdoors without trekking to the mountains. It’s built on a hillside within Town Park, offering views over the area while you burn some energy on the slopes.

What to do there
The main draw is the outdoor dry ski slope. You can go for open practice if you already know your stuff, or book onto lessons for skiing or snowboarding. If you aren’t interested in learning a technical skill and just want a laugh, they have tubing—basically sliding down the hill in a giant inflatable ring. It’s fast, bumpy, and requires zero skill.

Who it’s for

  • Young Kids: They have a “Tots” program for children as young as 3 to 5 years old to get them used to the snow (or bristles, in this case). Tubing is a massive hit with this age group too.
  • Teens: This is one of the few places where teenagers won’t get restless. It’s physically challenging and has a bit of an “extreme sports” vibe that keeps them engaged.
  • Adults: Whether you’re a total beginner or a seasoned pro wanting to keep your “ski legs” fresh before a holiday, it’s a solid workout.
  • Families: It’s a genuine “whole family” destination, though parents of very young children will need to stay close by. If the kids are teenagers and competent skiers, parents can easily grab a coffee and watch from the side.

The Experience

  • Time spent: Most people stay for 1 to 2 hours. Lessons usually last an hour, and an hour of tubing is more than enough to tire most people out.
  • Supervision: For tubing and lessons, staff are on hand to manage the flow, but for general play in the surrounding park, you’ll need to keep an eye on smaller kids. It’s more of an “active participation” day than a “sit back and relax” one for parents.
  • Is it “just to say you’ve done it”? Not really. It’s a functional sports venue. If you enjoy it, you’ll likely want to come back to improve your skills.

Planning your visit

  • Food & Drink: There is a small snack bar on-site for basics, but since it’s located right in Town Park, you’re better off heading into Runcorn Shopping City nearby if you want a proper meal or a variety of restaurants.
  • Money Savers: They often run family tickets for tubing which drops the per-person cost. It’s also worth checking for mid-week specials or block-booking lessons, as a single session is always the most expensive way to do it.
  • Parking: There is a dedicated car park right at the centre which makes hauling gear (or tired kids) much easier.
  • Nearby: Since it’s inside Town Park, you can easily combine a ski session with a walk through the woods or a visit to the miniature railway that runs nearby, making it a full afternoon out.
