Chester Racecourse

Chester Racecourse, also known as The Roodee, is located right on the edge of Chester city centre in Cheshire. It holds the title of the oldest functioning racecourse in the world, and because it’s a tight, circular track, you get a fantastic view of the horses no matter where you stand.

What to Expect
It’s a high-energy atmosphere, especially during the big summer meetings. You can watch the races, place bets, and enjoy the parade ring where the horses are shown before each heat. Most people spend a full afternoon or evening here (usually about 4 to 5 hours).

Is it for Kids or Adults?
While horse racing is naturally adult-oriented with plenty of bars and hospitality, Chester makes a real effort to be family-friendly, particularly on designated Family Fun Days. On those specific days, there are often huge inflatables, face painting, and activities to keep children entertained.

• Teenagers: Unless they enjoy the fashion and the “see and be seen” vibe, they might get restless between the short bursts of racing.
• Younger Children: They’ll love the space to run around on the open grass in the centre of the track (the Open Course), but they definitely need close supervision because of the crowds and the proximity to the track. It isn’t a “drop and go” situation for parents.
• Adults: This is a prime spot for groups of friends and couples. There is a strict dress code in most enclosures (think suits and fancy dresses), so it feels like a real “event.”

Planning the Trip

• Discounts: It’s worth checking for early bird offers online well in advance. Residents with certain local postcodes sometimes get a nod, and Blue Light Card holders can often find deals for specific fixtures.
• Memberships: Unless you live in Chester and plan on attending every single meeting, an annual membership probably isn’t necessary for a one-off family visit.
• Food and Drink: Eating inside the enclosures can be pricey. However, if you opt for the Open Course (the middle of the track), you can usually bring your own picnic and chairs, which is a much more budget-friendly way to do it.
• Parking: There is on-site parking, but it fills up fast and can be expensive on race days. Many people find it easier to use the city’s Park & Ride or walk from the nearby train station.

Since the course is nestled right against the City Walls, you can literally walk off the track and be in the heart of Chester within minutes. It’s perfect for combining with a walk along the Roman walls or a post-race dinner at the many restaurants and bars in the City Centre. If you want a break from the noise, the River Dee is just a short stroll away for a quiet boat trip.
