Blackpool Zoo

Blackpool Zoo is located in Blackpool, Lancashire, tucked away from the main beachfront noise near Stanley Park. It’s a fantastic spot for a full day out, usually keeping families busy for about 4 to 5 hours.

What’s there to do?
The zoo is home to over 1,000 animals. The big hitters are the Project Elephant base, which is one of the best elephant facilities in the UK, and the Gorilla Mountain. You can walk through Lemur Wood where the primates roam free around you, or head over to the Sea Lion display—the pool is huge and the training sessions are a massive highlight for everyone. There’s also a “Dinosaur Safari” walk-through which, while not real animals, is a bit of a cheesy thrill for younger kids.

Age Appeal & Vibe

  • Young Kids: They will love it. The zoo is very flat and easy to navigate with prams. The Playbarn is a large indoor soft play area that provides a genuine break for parents, though it is an add-on to the main day.
  • Teenagers: Unlike some smaller wildlife parks, the scale here usually keeps teens engaged, especially the big cats and the more immersive walk-through exhibits. However, those looking for high-octane thrills might get restless after a few hours.
  • Adults: It’s a very pleasant, leafy walk. If you aren’t into animals, it’s just a nice stroll, but the conservation talks are genuinely interesting rather than just “entertainment.”

Supervision & Safety
It is a very safe environment, but the walk-through areas (lemurs and birds) require children to be under close supervision so they don’t try to touch the residents!

Planning Your Budget

  • Discounts: Look out for Online Booking deals which are cheaper than paying at the gate. They often accept Blue Light Cards and offer Senior citizen rates. If you live locally, the Annual Membership is great value as it usually pays for itself in about three visits.
  • Food & Parking: There is a large on-site car park, but it does carry a daily charge. Food inside the zoo can be a bit pricey (standard theme park prices), so many families bring a picnic to enjoy on the large grass lawns.

Nearby Highlights
Because the zoo is right next to Stanley Park, you can easily combine the trip with a visit to the park’s massive adventure playground, ornamental gardens, or the boating lake. The Model Village is also right next door if you want to double up on attractions. For a more relaxed meal away from zoo crowds, the De Vere Village Hotel is a stone’s throw away and has good dining options.
