The Leisure Lakes – Southport

Leisure Lakes is located in Mere Brow, just outside Southport (Lancashire). It’s a bit of a sprawling, rugged outdoor complex that’s less of a polished theme park and more of a “choose your own adventure” kind of spot. It’s ideal for families who don’t mind a bit of mud or dust and want a full day of varied activities.

What’s the vibe?
This is a massive site centered around several lakes and woodland. It’s genuinely a whole-family destination because it’s segmented into different zones. You’ve got the high-energy motor zones, the quiet fishing spots, and the active play areas. Most people spend at least 4 to 6 hours here, though many stay for the whole day.

The Main Attractions

  • Western Approaches (The Western Frontier): This is a huge hit for kids and young teens. It’s a large, themed play area with a frontier/cowboy vibe. It’s not just a “small add-on” playground; it’s substantial enough to keep kids occupied for a long time while parents grab a breather nearby.
  • Motocross and Quads: There’s a dedicated track on-site. If you or your teenagers have a need for speed, this is the main draw. It can get loud and dusty, but for teens who usually get restless at “boring” parks, this is a lifesaver.
  • The Lakes: You can go jet skiing or flyboarding on the main lake, which is a great watch even if you aren’t participating. There are also quieter lakes for those into fishing.
  • Golf: There is a driving range and a par-3 course if you fancy something a bit more low-key.

Is it right for your group?

  • Young Kids: They will love the Western-themed play area and the space to run around. Close supervision is needed near the water’s edge, but the play areas are relatively self-contained.
  • Teenagers: Unlike many parks, this one actually appeals to teens because of the motocross, jet skiing, and the generally “unfiltered” outdoor feel. They won’t be bored here.
  • Adults: It’s a great spot for a walk or to sit by the water. The pub on-site, The Western Frontier, is themed like an old saloon and provides a decent base for the adults to relax.

Planning Your Visit

  • Money Savers: Keep an eye out for Blue Light Card discounts, as these are often accepted at various points on-site. If you live locally, an annual membership is worth considering, especially for the play area access.
  • Food and Drink: There’s an on-site cafe and the aforementioned Western-themed pub. The food is standard “pub grub” and quick bites—convenient, but can add up if you’re a large group. Many people choose to bring a picnic to save cash.
  • Parking: There is plenty of parking on-site, though there is a daily charge to enter the complex.
  • Nearby: Since you’re right on the edge of Mere Brow, you’re very close to Windgate Feather Farm (great for younger kids to see animals) and several local garden centres with excellent cafes if the on-site food doesn’t take your fancy.

It’s worth noting that it can feel a bit “rough around the edges” compared to a manicured city park, but that’s part of the charm. It’s a solid choice for a day out where the kids can actually burn off some energy.
