Castlerigg Stone Circle

Castlerigg Stone Circle is one of those places that feels a bit magical, mostly because the views are absolutely massive. It’s sitting on a natural plateau surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the Lake District, including Helvellyn and Skiddaw. Unlike some other stone circles that feel tucked away, this one gives you a full 360-degree mountain panorama.

For the walkers
There is a lovely circular route from Keswick town centre that is about 4 miles in total. It involves a bit of a steady uphill climb to get to the circle (so it’s a bit hilly), but the paths are generally good, consisting of a mix of pavement and firm trails. Once you’re at the top, the ground around the stones is grass, which can get a bit muddy after rain.

Make a day of it
Since you’re so close, you can easily combine this with a trip into Keswick. It’s a bustling town full of outdoor shops, quirky cafes, and bars. You could also head down to Derwentwater for a boat trip or a flat stroll around the lake to fill the rest of your afternoon.
