The Lakeland Motor Museum – Ulveston

The Lakeland Motor Museum is a total gem for anyone who loves nostalgia, shiny chrome, or just a trip down memory lane. Located at Cark-in-Cartmel, LA24 9BD, Cumbria, it’s tucked away at the southern end of Lake Windermere.

What’s the vibe?
It’s much more than just rows of cars. This place is a massive, eclectic collection of over 30,000 exhibits. You’ll find everything from classic motorbikes and quirky bubble cars to vintage tractors and even a reconstructed 1920s garage and shop. The star of the show for many is the Campbell Bluebird Exhibition, which is a dedicated building telling the thrilling (and tragic) story of Sir Malcolm and Donald Campbell’s speed records on the nearby lakes.

Things to do and see:

• The Campbell Collection: Check out the full-scale replicas of the 1935 Bluebird car and the 1967 K7 hydroplane.
• Nostalgia Trip: Wander through the “street scenes” that make you feel like you’ve stepped back 100 years.
• The Quiz: They often have a fun “find the mascot” style quiz for kids (and competitive adults) to keep everyone engaged as you walk around.

The “In-the-Know” stuff:

• Budgeting: To save some pennies, look out for combined “Boat & Motor” tickets. These allow you to pair a visit to the museum with a cruise on Lake Windermere, which usually works out much cheaper than buying them separately.
• Food: There’s a lovely cafe on-site called Cafe Ambio. It overlooks the River Leven and is famous for its scones and local food. It can get a bit pricey for a full family meal, so many visitors suggest bringing a packed lunch to eat by the riverside if the weather is nice, then just popping into the cafe for a treat.
• Parking: The good news is that parking right outside is free, which is a rare treat in the Lake District!
• Timing: Most people spend about 2 to 3 hours here. It’s entirely indoors, making it the ultimate “Plan B” for those classic Cumbrian rainy days.
