The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway is a classic heritage steam line that captures the nostalgic magic of the Lake District. Located at Haverthwaite Station, LA12 8AL, Cumbria, this is a brilliant trip for anyone who loves the puff and hiss of a vintage locomotive and some seriously scenic views.
What to expect and do
The main event is the 3.5-mile journey through the Leven Valley. You’ll be riding in beautifully restored vintage carriages, and if you’re lucky, you’ll get one of the steam engines to haul you along. The train chugs from Haverthwaite up to Lakeside, which sits right on the southern tip of Windermere. It’s a short but sweet ride, usually taking about 18 minutes each way.

At Haverthwaite station, there’s a lovely engine shed where you can often see the hard-working locos being maintained, and a traditional tea room for a brew and a slice of cake. There’s also a woodland play area for the little ones to burn off some steam of their own.
Budgeting and savvy tips

Combining your visit
Most people spend about 1.5 to 2 hours here if just doing the train, but it’s rarely a standalone trip. The railway is designed to link up perfectly with the Windermere Lake Cruises. You can hop off the train at Lakeside and step straight onto a boat to Bowness or Ambleside.
Right next to the Lakeside terminus, you’ll also find the Lakes Aquarium, which is a fantastic “add-on” for a full day out. If you’re looking for a good meal nearby after your ride, the Swan Hotel at Newby Bridge is just down the road and is a popular spot for a more substantial sit-down meal by the river.
