Aira Falls

Aira Force Waterfall

Watermillock, Penrith, CA11 0JS (Cumbria)

If you’re looking for that “wow” moment in the Lake District, Aira Force is a total classic. It’s a stunning 65-foot drop where the water thunders down into a deep, rocky pool. The sound alone is impressive, and after a bit of rain, it’s absolutely spectacular.

What’s the vibe?
It’s like stepping into a Victorian arboretum. You’ll find towering fir trees, hidden bridges, and plenty of “wishing trees” where you can hammer a coin into the bark. There are several viewing platforms; the stone bridge right at the top of the falls is the spot for the best photo, though be prepared for a little spray!

The Routes

  • The Main Falls Loop: This is a circular walk of about 1.5 to 2 miles. It’s mostly off-road with well-maintained gravel and stone paths, but be warned—it is hilly. There are quite a few steep sets of stairs to get to the best viewpoints.
  • Gowbarrow Trail: If you have more energy, follow the path up onto Gowbarrow Fell. It’s a 4-mile circular route that offers incredible panoramic views over Ullswater. This bit is more natural terrain (grass and dirt) and can get a bit muddy.

Useful Tips from Other Visitors

  • Red Squirrel Spotting: Keep your eyes peeled! This is one of the few places in England where red squirrels are frequently seen. They tend to hang out in the quieter wooded areas away from the main falls.
  • Timing: It gets very busy. Most people spend about 1.5 to 2 hours here, but if you’re doing the full fell walk, plan for half a day.

Budgeting & Practicalities

  • Parking: There is a main car park on-site. If you are a National Trust member, parking is free, which makes it a great value stop. If not, it can be a bit pricey for just a short stay.
  • Discounts: Keep an eye out for multi-site passes if you’re visiting other Lake District landmarks, as an annual membership quickly pays for itself if you plan on seeing a few of these spots.
  • Food & Drink: There is a lovely tea room near the car park for snacks and brews. However, many visitors mention that a picnic is the way to go—there are plenty of benches and flat rocks with a view that beat any café seat!

Nearby Add-ons
Since you’re right on the banks of Ullswater, you can easily combine this with a trip on the Ullswater ‘Steamers’. You can actually catch a boat from Glenridding or Pooley Bridge and hop off at the Aira Force pier, making the journey part of the adventure. If you’re fancying a proper meal afterwards, the villages of Glenridding and Patterdale are just a few minutes’ drive away with plenty of cosy pubs and bars.

Pro tip: If it’s been raining heavily, don’t stay away—that’s when the waterfall is at its most powerful and fun to watch!
