Tam o’ Shanter Urban Farm

Tam O’Shanter Urban Farm is a gem tucked away on Bidston Hill in Birkenhead, Wirral (Merseyside). It’s a community-run spot that’s perfect for a low-key, fresh-air afternoon, especially if you have younger children in tow.

What’s the vibe?
It’s a traditional urban farm, so expect to get up close with a variety of animals including pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, and some very friendly donkeys. It’s more of an interesting and educational visit than a high-octane theme park experience. Most families spend about 1 to 2 hours here wandering the paddocks and saying hello to the residents.

Who will love it?

  • Young Children: This is their territory. The chance to see farm animals at eye level is a huge hit for toddlers and primary school kids.
  • Teenagers: Likely to get restless fairly quickly. Unless they are huge animal lovers or looking for a quiet spot to volunteer, there isn’t much “action” to keep them gripped.
  • Parents: It’s a very “hands-on” parenting site. While there is a playground, it’s not the kind of place where you can just sit back and leave them to it; children need close supervision around the animals and the farm environment.

The Setup
The playground is a decent size and serves as a good carrot to dangle if the kids have been patient while looking at the goats. There is an on-site cafe serving basic snacks and drinks, which is handy, but many visitors choose to bring a picnic. Parking is usually available nearby on the road or in small designated areas, and it won’t break the bank.

Making a day of it
Because the farm itself is a relatively short visit, you’ll definitely want to combine it with a walk on Bidston Hill. The hill offers great views across the Wirral and over to the Liverpool skyline. You can see the Bidston Windmill and the Observatory from the outside, which adds a bit of “I’ve seen that” history to your trip.

Insider Tips

  • Keep an eye out for seasonal events; they often do little trails or themed days that add a bit of extra fun for the kids.
  • Check for concession discounts if you are a senior or a Blue Light card holder, as these are often supported.
  • If you’re still hungry or want a proper meal afterwards, there are plenty of pubs and cafes down the road in Oxton Village or Birkenhead that offer a wider menu.
