The original U-boat Story in Birkenhead, Merseyside, is currently closed.
However, it isn’t gone for good; it is being completely transformed into a massive new attraction called the Battle of the Atlantic Museum. The new site is expected to open in late 2026.
This isn’t just a quick coat of paint—the new museum will be ten times larger than the old one. Here is what you can look forward to when it launches:
The Main Attraction: You will get to see U-534, one of only four surviving German U-boats in the world. It’s unique because it was salvaged from the seabed decades after the war. It is cut into sections with glass partitions, so you can see the cramped living conditions and complex machinery inside without actually squeezing through a tiny hatch.
New Perspectives: The new design includes a viewing platform that lets you look down on the submarine from above and even see it from underneath to inspect the damage that sank it.
The Big Picture: The museum will also feature a US Grumman Avenger bomber and various interactive displays that tell the wider story of the Battle of the Atlantic.
Family & Teen Appeal: While the subject matter is historical, the new “immersive” digital experiences and interactive exhibits are designed to keep teenagers engaged. It’s a great spot for the whole family, though very young children might find the technical history a bit heavy—the real “wow” factor for them will be the sheer size of the submarine sections.
How Long to Spend: Once the full museum and surrounding plaza are finished, you should probably allow a good two to three hours to see everything properly, especially if you combine it with the café and the riverside views.
Planning Your Visit
The museum is located right by the Woodside Ferry Terminal. While you wait for the grand opening, you can actually see some of the submarine’s original artefacts—including secret Nazi documents and Enigma machines—over at the Western Approaches Museum in Liverpool.
Once the new museum opens, there will be a joint ticket option. This means you can visit the Allied secret headquarters in Liverpool, then hop on a Mersey Ferry across the water to see the “enemy” U-boat in Birkenhead, making for a perfect full-day out for history buffs and families alike.
Nearby Highlights:
Hamilton Square: A short walk away, this square has more Grade I listed buildings than anywhere outside London and is great for a wander.
Waterfront Plaza: The area around the museum is being turned into a new public square with a riverside café and bar, perfect for a break with a view of the Liverpool skyline.
