Brewery Tours in North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire is a bit of a holy grail for beer lovers, blending centuries-old brewing traditions with a thriving modern craft scene. Whether you’re into the smell of roasted malt in a historic cobble-stoned setting or the experimental vibes of a coastal microbrewery, there’s plenty to drink in.

The Big Names and Historic Hubs

The Black Sheep Brewery

  • Where: Wellgarth, Masham, Ripon, HG4 4EN (North Yorkshire)
  • The Vibe: This is a classic. It was started by the Black Sheep of the Theakston family, and the tour is legendary. You’ll get to see the traditional “Yorkshire Square” fermenting vessels—which look like big stone baths—and the smell of the mash is incredible.
  • What to Do: After seeing how the magic happens, you end up in the Bistro and Bar for a flight of their best. It’s very family-friendly, and even if you aren’t a beer geek, the engineering and history are fascinating.
  • Top Tip: Other visitors often say it’s worth booking the “Shepherds’ Table” if you’re a group, as it makes the tasting feel a bit more special.

T&R Theakston

  • Where: Masham, Ripon, HG4 4YD (North Yorkshire)
  • The Vibe: Just a short walk from Black Sheep, so you can easily do both in one afternoon! This is one of the few places left with a working cooperage.
  • What to See: Watching a master cooper craft wooden barrels by hand is a rare treat. The tour is very “old world” and atmospheric.
  • Budgeting: Since both Masham breweries are so close, you can park once and explore the whole town on foot.

Coastal and City Craft

Whitby Brewery

  • Where: East Cliff, Whitby, YO22 4JR (North Yorkshire)
  • The Vibe: This one has arguably the best view in the county, perched right at the top of the 199 steps, literally in the shadow of Whitby Abbey.
  • What to Experience: It’s a smaller, more intimate setup housed in a converted barn. It’s very laid back—you can grab a pint and a wood-fired pizza while looking out over the cliffs.
  • Planning: It’s a great reward after the climb up from the harbour. Visitors recommend keeping an eye out for their live music nights which usually happen in the warmer months.

Brew York

  • Where: Walmgate, York, YO1 9TT (North Yorkshire)
  • The Vibe: If you want something modern and edgy, this is it. It’s a massive complex with a brewery, a taproom, and a “Beer Hall” with over 40 taps.
  • What to Do: The tours are chatty and informal, focusing on their crazy flavour combinations (think dessert-inspired beers).
  • Age Note: While kids are welcome in the food areas, the tours are strictly for those 18 and over.

Budgeting and Making a Day of It

  • Saving Pennies: Many of these breweries offer a “Drivers’ Ticket” for the tour, which is cheaper and usually comes with a bottle to take home since you can’t drink on-site.
  • Food: While the larger breweries have great bistros, they can be a bit pricey for a full family meal. Packing a picnic to eat by the river in Masham or on the Abbey headland in Whitby is a great way to save, then just head into the brewery for a drink and the tour.
  • Time Spent: Most tours last about 1 to 1.5 hours, but you’ll likely want another hour in the taproom afterwards.
  • Parking: In York, don’t try to park at the brewery; use the Park and Ride to save a fortune and avoid the city centre traffic. In Masham, there is usually plenty of parking in the market square.
  • Nearby Fun: You can easily combine the Masham breweries with a trip to Lightwater Valley for the kids, or combine Whitby Brewery with a walk around the Abbey ruins.
