Studley Royal Water Gardens – Ripon
Studley Royal Water Garden is a total showstopper and easily one of the most impressive landscaped gardens you’ll ever see. Located just outside Ripon in North Yorkshire (HG4 3DY), it’s a massive hit for families, photographers, and anyone who just wants a stunning place to wander.
Why You’ll Love It
The garden is famous for its “wow” factor. It was designed in the 18th century with perfectly still mirror-like ponds, grand statues, and quirky little “follies” (basically fancy stone buildings tucked away in the trees). The real star of the show, though, is the view of Fountains Abbey. As you walk along the water, the massive, romantic ruins of the abbey suddenly appear through the trees—it’s a genuine “stop and stare” moment.

- The Moon Ponds: These are the iconic crescent-shaped pools. They are super peaceful and perfect for a slow stroll.
- Deer Park: Before you even get to the water gardens, you’ll likely drive or walk through the huge medieval deer park. Keep your eyes peeled for Red, Fallow, and Sika deer hanging out under the ancient trees.
- The Abbey Ruins: You can’t visit the gardens without exploring the ruins of the Cistercian abbey. Kids love running through the old stone arches and exploring the vast grassy nave.

- Timing: Most people spend a good 3 to 5 hours here because the site is sprawling. If you’ve got the energy, you can easily make a full day of it.
- Saving Money: This is a National Trust and English Heritage site. If you are a member of either, entry is free, which makes it a massive bargain. For families who live nearby, an annual membership is well worth it just to use the grounds for walks.
- Parking: There is a large car park at the visitor centre. While there is a fee for non-members, it’s often included in the ticket price, so check the arrival signs.
- Food & Drink: There’s a lovely restaurant at the visitor centre and a smaller tea room down by the lake. However, it can get pricey for a full family meal. If you want to make a weekend of it, the city of Ripon is just a few minutes away. It’s got a gorgeous cathedral and a lovely market square. For a bit of a contrast, Lightwater Valley theme park is also nearby if the kids need some high-speed thrills after a calm morning in the gardens.
