RHS Garden Harlow Carr is the Royal Horticultural Society’s northern showpiece — nearly 60 acres of glorious gardens folded into the rugged countryside on the edge of Harrogate. Very much a Yorkshire garden, tougher and wilder than its southern siblings, it’s a delight in every season, from candelabra primulas blazing along the stream in early summer to frosty winter walks — with the small matter of a Bettys tea room waiting at the gate.

The heart of Harlow Carr is the longest streamside garden in the UK, a ribbon of moisture-loving planting that’s one of the great sights of northern gardening. Beyond it lie flower-packed main borders, the scented and kitchen gardens, a subtropical garden that whisks you far from Yorkshire, an alpine house with more than 2,000 jewel-like plants, and the peaceful Queen Mother’s Lake ringed by wildflower meadows. Families, Bettys and Events
Children get some of the best natural play of any garden in Britain: woodland trails leading to the Craggle Top tree house, the Logness Monster and a giant spider’s nest. Refuelling is a highlight in itself — Bettys Café Tea Rooms, Yorkshire’s most famous tea house, sits at the garden entrance, with the Harrogate Arms café serving produce from the kitchen garden inside. The events calendar runs all year, from plant fairs to the magical RHS Glow illuminations in winter.

Harlow Carr is a mile and a half from Harrogate town centre — a lovely walk through the Valley Gardens and pinewoods — and open daily except Christmas Day, with online booking cheaper, RHS members free, and a generous discount if you arrive car-free by bus, train, bike or on foot. It anchors a perfect Harrogate break alongside Mother Shipton’s Cave at Knaresborough and the World Heritage glories of Fountains Abbey near Ripon.
