Fountains Abbey

Fountains Abbey is one of those places that genuinely feels like stepping onto a film set. Located near Ripon in North Yorkshire (HG4 3DY), it’s a massive hit for families and hikers alike because it’s a “two-for-one” deal: you get the hauntingly beautiful skeleton of a Cistercian abbey and the lush, manicured Studley Royal Water Garden all in one go.

What’s the vibe?

It’s all about exploring. You can wander through the soaring stone arches of the abbey—which is surprisingly intact enough to give you a real sense of how the monks lived—and then stroll along the river to the water garden. The gardens are famous for their “surprise” views, where the statues and ponds are perfectly aligned to frame the abbey in the distance.

For the kids (and energetic adults), there’s a massive adventure playground near the visitor centre with zip lines and wooden forts. In the autumn, the Deer Park is a must-see; it’s home to hundreds of wild deer, and watching them under the ancient trees is pretty magical.

Top tips for your visit:

  • Time well spent: You can easily spend 4 to 5 hours here if you’re doing the full circuit. If you add in the playground and a long lunch, it’s a full day out.
  • The Route: The walk from the abbey to the far end of the gardens is level and mostly gravelled, making it easy for buggies. However, if you head up to the high-level paths for the famous viewpoints, expect some steep, woody climbs.
  • Budgeting & Food: It’s a National Trust spot, so if you’re a member, it’s “free.” If not, an annual membership is often cheaper than two visits for a family.
    • Picnic Power: Food at the restaurant can be a bit pricey during peak times. There are loads of gorgeous grassy spots by the river, so bringing a packed lunch is a very popular move.
    • Parking: The main car park is huge and free, though it’s a bit of a walk down to the actual ruins, so wear comfy shoes!

Nearby extras:

If you have any energy left, the city of Ripon is just a few minutes away. It’s a lovely little market town where you can see the Ripon Cathedral or watch the “Hornblower” ceremony in the market square (usually every evening).
