Harewood House – Leeds

Harewood House is a massive, grand estate in Harewood, Leeds (LS17 9LG, West Yorkshire) that really packs a punch for a full day out. It’s definitely not your average “look but don’t touch” stately home—there is so much going on outside that it’s a total win for families and groups.

What’s the vibe?
Imagine a huge, fancy palace surrounded by 1,000 acres of “let’s go explore” space. Inside the house, it’s all about over-the-top gold ceilings and incredible art, but the real fun for most is the Bird Garden and the Adventure Playground. You’ll see penguins (yes, in Leeds!), flamingos, and parrots. People often spend a solid 4 to 5 hours here, especially if the weather is nice, as you can easily lose half a day just wandering the lakeside and gardens.

Things to do & see:

• The Bird Garden: This is a big hit with all ages. Watching the Humboldt penguins being fed is a highlight, and there are some seriously exotic birds to spot.
• Adventure Playground: It’s huge and great for burning off energy. It’s targeted at younger kids and pre-teens, with plenty of climbing and sliding.
• The Gardens: There’s a Himalayan garden with a stupa and a bridge that feels like a hidden world, plus a massive lake. You can take a little boat across the water during the warmer months, which is a lovely touch.
• Inside the House: If you’re into history or “Bridgerton” vibes, the state rooms are stunning. There is often a “Below Stairs” area to see where the real work happened, which is quite cool to compare to the fancy bits upstairs.

• Budgeting: It’s not the cheapest day out, so keep an eye out for online booking discounts as it’s usually cheaper to buy tickets in advance rather than at the gate. If you live nearby and plan to go more than twice, the Annual Membership is a complete no-brainer—it pays for itself very quickly.
• Food & Drink: The food at the courtyard café is tasty but can be a bit pricey for a full family. Many visitors recommend bringing a picnic. There are loads of scenic spots to sit, and it’ll save you a fair bit of cash.
• Parking: Parking is right on-site and generally included or very straightforward, so no need to hunt for street spots.

If you want to make a full weekend of it, you’re right on the doorstep of Leeds city centre for shopping or the charming town of Harrogate for a posh tea at Betty’s. Just outside the gates, the village of Harewood has the Harewood Arms, which is a great spot for a more substantial meal or a drink after you’ve finished exploring the estate.
