Nostell Priory

Nostell Priory is a grand 18th-century estate that feels like stepping into a period drama, but with much more space to run around! Located near Wakefield in West Yorkshire (WF4 1QE), it’s a top-tier choice for a day out that blends fancy interiors with massive outdoor adventures.

What’s the Vibe?

Inside the house, you’re looking at serious “wow” factor. It’s famous for its incredible collection of Chippendale furniture—basically the gold standard of 1700s craftsmanship—and a massive, intricate dolls’ house that looks better than most real homes! The library is a dream for book lovers, and the whole place feels lived-in rather than like a cold museum.

Outside is where the high-energy fun happens. There are over 300 acres of parkland and gardens to explore. The adventure playground is a huge hit with families, featuring a zip wire that keeps the more energetic members of the group busy for ages. You can stroll through the Orchard, wander by the lakes, or hunt for the “Menagerie Garden.”

• Time Spent: Most visitors find they can easily spend 3 to 4 hours here. If you’re planning on doing both the house and the full woodland walks, you could easily make a full day of it.
• The Budget: If you aren’t a member of the National Trust, there is an admission fee, so keep an eye out for family tickets which usually offer a better rate than buying individually. If you plan on visiting more than three or four similar heritage sites in a year, an annual membership is definitely the way to go as it pays for itself quickly and covers your parking too.
• Food & Drink: There is a courtyard café serving the usual treats, but it can get pricey if you’re feeding a whole troop. Many savvy visitors bring a picnic to enjoy in the parkland—there are loads of great spots by the lake to sit and relax.
• Parking: There is a large on-site car park. It is a bit of a walk from the car park to the house, so bear that in mind if you have little ones or are carrying a heavy picnic bag!

If you want to make a weekend of it, you’re very close to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, which is another massive outdoor space with world-class art. For a bit of a different pace, the centre of Wakefield is just a short drive away for more dining options or a visit to the cathedral.
