Saltaire & Salts Mill

Saltaire is one of the wonders of the North — an entire Victorian model village, built in golden Italianate stone by the wool baron Sir Titus Salt for his workers in the 1850s, and so perfectly preserved that UNESCO made the whole place a World Heritage Site. At its heart stands the colossal Salts Mill, reborn as one of Britain’s great free days out: galleries, bookshops and cafés wrapped around a world-class collection of art by Bradford’s most famous son, David Hockney.

Salts Mill and the Hockney Galleries

Astonishingly, both entry and parking at Salts Mill are free. Inside the vast, light-filled floors you’ll find one of the largest collections of David Hockney’s work anywhere, from the permanent 1853 Gallery to major changing exhibitions of his exuberant paintings and iPad works — plus the story of the mill itself in the People and Process displays. Add a huge and much-loved bookshop, design and home stores, and the famous Salts Diner, and half a day disappears very happily indeed. Note the mill currently closes early in the week, so check opening days before travelling.

The Village

Salt built his workers not just a mill but a whole ordered world: neat stone terraces, almshouses, a hospital, school, church and institute — everything except a pub, for the teetotal Titus. Wander Victoria Road past the magnificent Congregational church where Salt lies buried, cross the canal to Roberts Park to find his statue (and a pair of bronze llamas honouring the alpaca wool that made his fortune), and stroll the Leeds & Liverpool Canal towpath beneath the mill. Independent cafés and, yes, finally some pubs fill the village streets today.

Visiting Saltaire

Saltaire could not be easier to reach: its own railway station sits directly opposite the mill, about 15 minutes from Leeds and 12 from Bradford, and there’s free parking at the mill off Salts Mill Road. The village is free to wander all day, every day. Walkers can carry on along the canal or up onto Shipley Glen with its Victorian tramway — or explore more things to do in West Yorkshire.
