National Museum Cardiff

National Museum Cardiff is one of the best free attractions in the city, especially if your group has mixed interests.

You can move from dinosaurs, fossils and wildlife to Impressionist paintings, sculpture and major temporary exhibitions without leaving the building.

Start with Natural History

The natural history galleries are usually the easiest place to begin with children.

You can explore Welsh wildlife, marine life and habitats, with large specimens and displays that make the galleries feel much more immediate than a traditional museum collection.

One of the most memorable sights is the enormous basking shark suspended overhead.

Good for mixed ages: Children can head towards animals and fossils while adults can spend much longer in the art galleries, so the museum works particularly well for families who do not all enjoy the same things.

Travel Through Wales’s Geological Past

The geology collections tell the story of Wales over hundreds of millions of years.

Fossils, rocks and reconstructed environments show how dramatically the landscape has changed, from ancient seas to the country we recognise today.

If you have children who like dinosaurs, fossils or anything prehistoric, allow extra time here.

Upstairs, the mood changes completely.

The art galleries cover around 500 years of painting, sculpture, ceramics, silver and decorative art from Wales and around the world.

The Impressionist and Post-Impressionist collection is particularly strong, so even visitors who normally only spend a few minutes in an art gallery may find themselves staying much longer than expected.

Check the Temporary Exhibitions

One of the reasons National Museum Cardiff is worth revisiting is that the programme changes throughout the year.

Major touring exhibitions, installations, talks and family activities regularly take over different parts of the building.

During summer 2026, for example, the museum is hosting Helios, a large-scale installation based on imagery of the Sun, alongside the long-running Ffasiwn fashion exhibition.

Check what is on before you visit because some special exhibitions or events require a separate ticket even though general museum admission is free.

Bring the Children

The museum is much more family-friendly than its grand exterior might suggest.

Natural history, fossils and changing hands-on activities give younger visitors plenty to look at, while family events run throughout school holidays.

If attention starts to fade, move to a completely different gallery rather than trying to push through one long subject.

Combine It with Central Cardiff

The museum sits in Cathays Park, right in Cardiff’s civic centre.

That makes it very easy to combine with the city centre, Cardiff Castle, shopping or somewhere to eat without needing another long drive.

It is also one of the best attractions to keep in reserve for a wet day because you can comfortably spend several hours inside.

A Few Useful Tips

National Museum Cardiff is at Cathays Park, Cardiff CF10 3NP.

General admission is free.

The museum is currently open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Sunday and is closed on Mondays, apart from bank holidays.

The galleries begin closing shortly before 5pm, so arrive earlier if you want time to see both the art and natural history collections.

Wheelchair access is available throughout the galleries, and manual wheelchairs can be borrowed free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis.

There is visitor parking behind the museum, but because it is in central Cardiff, public transport can often be the easier option.

Allow at least two or three hours for a general visit. Art or natural-history enthusiasts could easily spend much longer.
