St Fagans National Museum of history

St Fagans is one of the best family days out in South Wales because it does not feel like a normal museum.

Instead of walking through one building full of display cases, you explore a huge open-air site filled with historic homes, shops, workshops, a school, farm buildings, gardens and places of worship brought here from across Wales.

Walk Through Welsh History

More than 40 historic buildings have been moved to St Fagans from different parts of Wales and rebuilt here.

You can walk into farmhouses, workers’ cottages, shops, a school, a chapel and other buildings showing how Welsh families lived and worked at different points in history.

One of the cleverest things about St Fagans is that you can see the changes for yourself rather than simply reading about them.

Do not rush it: St Fagans is much larger than it first appears. Give yourself several hours so you can go inside the buildings rather than simply walking past them.

See the Historic Homes

Some of the most memorable buildings are the ordinary homes.

The interiors show how families cooked, slept and worked, and you can move from simple rural cottages to later terraced houses and see how everyday life changed over the centuries.

Children often enjoy these buildings because they make history feel real — especially when they spot old beds, fireplaces, toys and household objects that look completely different from home today.

Watch Traditional Crafts

St Fagans is at its best when the workshops are active.

Traditional craftspeople demonstrate skills that were once part of everyday Welsh life, with activities such as blacksmithing and clog making taking place around the site.

It is worth stopping to watch because seeing something being made makes the buildings and history much more interesting than simply reading an information board.

Visit St Fagans Castle & Gardens

The museum grounds also contain St Fagans Castle, a historic manor house surrounded by formal gardens.

The house and gardens give you a completely different experience from the cottages and workshops elsewhere on the site.

Take time to wander through the gardens, especially on a sunny day when it is easy to forget you are only a few miles from central Cardiff.

Look Out for the Vulcan Hotel

One of the newest historic buildings at St Fagans is the Vulcan Hotel, which originally stood in Cardiff.

The building has been reconstructed to show how the pub looked during an earlier period of its history, adding another very familiar part of Welsh social life to the museum.

The Vulcan is currently open daily during the afternoon, so it is worth including as you make your way around the site.

Bring the Children

St Fagans works very well for families because there is so much space and the visit never feels like one long museum exhibition.

There are animals around parts of the site, historic buildings to explore, open spaces, family activities and changing events throughout the year.

During August 2026 the museum is also running its free Step into history programme every day, with activities taking place around the site.

Stop for Food

There are several places to eat and drink around the museum, so you do not need to leave the site when everyone gets hungry.

Because St Fagans is large, it is worth planning a proper break rather than trying to cover the whole site without stopping.

There are also picnic areas if you prefer to bring your own food.

A Few Useful Tips

The museum is currently open every day from 10am to 5pm, including bank holidays except Christmas.

General admission is free. If you arrive by car, there is a separate parking charge.

The site is extensive, so comfortable shoes are a good idea. Most visitors should allow at least three or four hours, and it is very easy to spend most of the day here.

There is level access into the outdoor museum from the main entrance building, and lifts provide access to the indoor galleries.

Events and craft demonstrations change through the year, so check what is happening on the day of your visit if you want to see something specific.
