Verdant Works

Verdant Works is an atmospheric, restored 19th-century jute mill that tells the story of Dundee’s time as the “jute capital of the world.” It is located in Dundee, Angus, and uses the postcode DD1 5BT.

What to Expect and Enjoy

The moment you walk in, the smell of jute and the sound of the machinery transport you back in time. You can see the massive steam engine in action and watch live demonstrations of the old weaving looms. The museum does a fantastic job of showing the grit and determination of the “mill girls” and families who worked there. It’s an incredibly interactive experience where you can touch the raw jute fibres and see how they were transformed into everything from rope to sacks. It’s a very authentic, “hands-on” history lesson that feels very personal to the city.

Best For and Time Spent

It’s a hit with families, social history fans, and anyone interested in the industrial revolution. The indoor nature makes it another great rainy-day choice.

  • Duration: Most people spend about two hours here to see the machinery demonstrations and explore the social history galleries.
