Pitlochry Fish Ladder and Dam

The Pitlochry Fish Ladder is a unique piece of engineering that allows Atlantic salmon to bypass the town’s hydroelectric dam to reach their spawning grounds. It is located in Pitlochry, Perthshire, and uses the postcode PH16 5AP.

What to Expect and Enjoy

This is a fascinating outdoor sight where you can see 34 separate pools that let the fish “climb” the 86-foot height of the dam. The best part is the underwater viewing window, where you can stand and watch the salmon swim past if you’re there at the right time. The dam itself is an impressive sight, and the visitor centre explains how the water is used to generate clean electricity for the area. There is also a beautiful walk across the top of the dam that provides stunning views over Loch Faskally and the surrounding mountains.

Best For and Time Spent

It is a brilliant stop for families, nature lovers, and anyone who enjoys a scenic walk. The paths are mostly level and easy for all ages to navigate.

  • Duration: Most people spend about forty-five minutes to an hour here, including a visit to the viewing window and a walk across the dam.

Helpful Tips for Your Visit

  • Timing: To see the salmon, it’s best to visit between the late spring and early autumn months, as they are most active during this period.
  • Parking: There is a car park at the visitor centre, but it can get very busy in the summer. A great option is to park in Pitlochry town centre and take the short, beautiful walk through the woods to the dam.
  • Value: It is completely free to walk across the dam and look through the fish viewing window.

Nearby and Combine-able Hits

The ladder is located right next to the Pitlochry Festival Theatre, which has a lovely riverside garden. You are also just a short drive from Blair Castle and the famous Queen’s View overlook at Loch Tummel.
