Plantasia Tropical Zoo – Swansea

Plantasia Tropical Zoo is currently open for visitors.

What is Plantasia Swansea?

Plantasia is an indoor tropical zoo housed within an iconic large glass pyramid. It features a lush, living rainforest environment with exotic plants that have been growing on-site for over 35 years. The temperature inside is maintained at a minimum of 18°C to mimic a real tropical climate, making it a “jungle in the city.”

Where is it?

It is located in the heart of Swansea City Centre at the Parc Tawe Retail Park (Postcode: SA1 2AL). It is conveniently situated near major retailers like Aldi and Odeon, and is less than a 10-minute walk from both the Swansea bus and train stations.

What can you see and do?

  • Exotic Wildlife: Come face-to-face with over 40 species, including crocodiles, meerkats, monkeys, leopard cats, pythons, tarantulas, and parrots.
  • Immersive Rainforest: Explore different layers of the jungle, from crawling through the undergrowth to climbing into the canopy.
  • Interactive Features: Engage with educational trails, a brand-new “Vital Venoms & Practical Poisons” room, and the “Giants of the Past” installation that uses AR on your mobile to bring prehistoric creatures to life.
  • VIP Experiences: For an extra cost, you can book specialized activities like crocodile feeding or “Zookeeper for a day” experiences.

Typical Visit Duration

On average, visitors spend between 1 to 2 hours at the attraction. While the physical loop can be walked in 30 to 45 minutes, guests are encouraged to go around multiple times to spot animals that may have been hiding or inactive during the first pass.

Who will enjoy it most?

  • Families with Young Children: The interactive nature and manageable size make it perfect for toddlers and primary school-aged children.
  • Nature and Photography Enthusiasts: Those with a hobby in botany or wildlife photography will appreciate the unique specimens and close-up views.
  • Weather-Proof Seekers: It is an ideal destination for anyone looking for a “rainy day filler” or a warm escape during cold winter months.

Suitability and Accessibility

  • Perfect Suitability: The venue is fully wheelchair and pram accessible with wide, gradually sloping paths and no stairs.
  • Limited Experience: Older teenagers or adults looking for a high-thrill, full-day excursion may find the experience too brief. Additionally, those who struggle with high humidity and heat may find the tropical climate (18°C–22°C+) uncomfortable.

Best Time to Visit

  • Quieter Times: Weekday mornings are typically the least busy. Weekends and school holidays are the most crowded, particularly Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
  • Weather Strategy: It is a prime “wet weather” destination. Conversely, on very sunny days, the glass pyramid can become extremely hot inside.

What makes it unique?

Unlike standard zoos or nearby botanical gardens (like Clyne Gardens), Plantasia offers a fully indoor, climate-controlled rainforest in an urban setting. It is the only place in Wales where you can experience a “Crocodile Feeding” encounter.

Budget and Offers

  • Online Booking: Tickets are significantly cheaper when booked in advance online (saving up to £2 per person) compared to “on the door” prices.
  • Travel Discounts: You can save 20% on general admission when travelling by train with Transport for Wales Big Days Out (proof of travel required).
  • Specific Deals: Look for the “Afternoon Adventure” deal during term-time for reduced entry.
  • Free Entry: Carers accompanying a person they care for and toddlers (under 2) typically enter for free.

Membership Benefits

Frequent visitors, particularly local families, can benefit from Annual Memberships. These provide unlimited entry for a year, which quickly pays for itself if you visit more than three or four times, especially given how popular the site is for repeat visits during rainy holidays.

Visitor Advice

  • Clothing: Wear light layers or t-shirts. Even in winter, the humidity and heat inside make heavy coats uncomfortable.
  • Food: There is an on-site Canopy Café, but you are also surrounded by the Parc Tawe retail park which has numerous food outlets.
  • Parking: Visitors get 2 hours of free parking at Parc Tawe. This can be extended to 4 hours for free by registering your car’s number plate on the tablet inside the Plantasia gift shop.
  • Animal Sightings: Animals move around; if you don’t see something the first time, loop back again—your ticket allows unlimited circuits during your visit.
