South Wales features premier walking and cycling routes, including the iconic 55-mile Taff Trail (Cardiff to Brecon), the scenic coastal Swansea Bike Path, and the challenging Lôn Las Cymru. Key traffic-free trails include the Elan Valley Trail and the Celtic Trail, while mountain bikers frequent Afan Forest Park and Glyncorrwg. 

Main Walking & Cycling Routes (Shared Use)

  • Taff Trail: Connects Cardiff Bay to Brecon (55 miles) through forests and valley towns, ideal for mixed-terrain cycling and walking.
  • Celtic Trail (NCN 4 & 47): A major route from Chepstow to Fishguard via Newport, Cardiff, and Swansea, featuring many traffic-free sections.
  • Swansea Bike Path: A flat, coastal path running from the maritime quarter to Mumbles, offering stunning Gower views.
  • Elan Valley Trail: A scenic route near Rhayader following a disused railway line through reservoirs.
  • Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal: A peaceful towpath walk or easy ride between Newport and Pontypool.
  • Lôn Las Cymru (NCN 8): A challenging north-to-south route traversing the Brecon Beacons. 

Cycling and Mountain Biking (MTB)

  • Afan Forest Park: Famous for dedicated, award-winning mountain bike trails, including the “White’s Level” and “W2” tracks.
  • BikePark Wales (Merthyr Tydfil): A premier destination for downhill mountain biking.
  • Cwmcarn Forest: Features the “Twister” and “Y Mynydd” trails, renowned for steep, technical riding.

Walking Trails

  • Wales Coast Path – South Wales Section: Covers the coastline from Chepstow to St Dogmaels, including the dramatic Glamorgan Heritage Coast.

Riding (Horse Riding)
