Forbidden Corner

The Forbidden Corner is tucked away in Tupgill Park, Leyburn, North Yorkshire (DL8 4TJ).

Originally built as a private folly, this place has morphed into a massive, four-acre “labyrinth” of tunnels, chambers, and surprises. It’s arguably one of the most unique days out in the UK because it doesn’t come with a map—the whole point is to get lost, find hidden doors, and figure out how to trigger the various water jets and statues. It is essentially a treasure hunt (finding follies) in a maze of landscaped gardens.

What to Expect

  • The Experience: You’ll wander through a huge pyramid made of glass, find yourself in an underground “Temple of the Underworld,” and navigate paths that lead to dead ends or unexpected views of the Yorkshire Dales.
  • Fun Factor: It is genuinely entertaining for all ages because it’s so tactile. You’ll be pushing on walls to find secret passages and dodging fountains that might soak you if you step on the wrong stone.
  • For the Kids: There’s a giant “Face” you can walk into, and the woods are filled with strange statues and oversized carvings.

Insider Tips & Budgeting

  • Timing: Most people spend about 2 to 3 hours exploring the gardens and tunnels.
  • Food & Drink: There is a café on-site, but many visitors recommend bringing a picnic. There are plenty of nice spots in the park to eat, and it’s a great way to keep costs down as on-site catering can add up for a family.
  • Parking: Parking is free and right on-site, so no need to worry about trekking from a nearby village.
  • Good to Know: Wear sensible shoes! Some of the tunnels are narrow, the floors can be uneven, and you might get a little damp from the water features. If you have very young children, keep in mind that some of the darker underground sections might be a bit spooky, but it’s generally all in good fun.

Nearby Fun

Since you’re already in the heart of the Dales, you can easily pair this with a trip into Leyburn. It’s a classic market town with lovely local shops. If you have any energy left, Aysgarth Falls is just a short drive away; it’s a spectacular spot to see the river stepping down through the limestone, and it’s a perfect place for a bit of a wander or some photos.
