Bolton Castle is a massive, incredibly well-preserved medieval fortress located in Castle Bolton, Leyburn, North Yorkshire (DL8 4ET). This isn’t a ruin; it’s a sturdy, atmospheric castle that’s still owned by the descendants of the family who built it!
What’s the fun stuff to do?
You can explore a huge chunk of the castle, from the eerie dungeons up to the battlements for some of the best views of Wensleydale. It’s famous for being one of the places where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned, and you can see her actual quarters.
The real highlights for a family day out are the daily displays. They have falconry and hawk flying most days, which is spectacular against the castle backdrop. You can also watch archery demonstrations and even wild boar feeding. There’s a lovely garden and a vineyard (one of the highest in the UK!) to wander through.

Tips for your visit:
Handy info:
The castle has some very steep, winding stone spiral staircases and uneven floors. While it adds to the medieval vibe, it’s worth wearing sturdy shoes. Because of the stairs, many of the upper levels aren’t accessible for pushchairs or those with mobility issues, but the courtyard and gardens are much easier to navigate.
Nearby Gems:
If you want to make a full day of it, the famous Aysgarth Falls are just a short drive away. They are stunning triple-flight waterfalls and perfect for a quick walk. For a post-castle meal or a bit of shopping, the charming market town of Leyburn is close by and full of local cafes and pubs.
