Isle of Arran

Arran is the most accessible of the Scottish islands, sitting in the Firth of Clyde. To get there, you catch a large ferry from Ardrossan in North Ayrshire, which arrives in the main town of Brodick (KA27 8AY). It feels like a real adventure from the moment the ferry doors open.

What to Expect and Enjoy
The island is split into two halves: the north is rugged and mountainous, while the south is lush and green with rolling hills.

Brodick Village: This is the hub of the island. It has a beautiful putting green, several local craft shops, and a long beach with incredible views of the peaks.
The Food Trail: Arran is a foodie’s dream. People visit specifically to stock up on Arran Cheese, Arran Ice Cream, and handmade chocolates. Many of the small producers have viewing windows where you can watch them work.
Active Adventures: For those who like to move, you can hike up Goatfell (the highest peak) or rent bikes to cycle the coastal roads. The “Machrie Moor Standing Stones” offer a flatter walk through ancient history.
Lochranza: At the north of the island, this village is home to a ruined castle sitting on a spit of land in the sea. It’s also one of the best places to see wild red deer grazing right by the road.

Arran is perfect for families, active couples, and nature lovers.

Duration: While you can visit for a full day trip, most people find that a weekend break is better to really see the island without rushing.

Helpful Tips for Your Visit

The Ferry: You usually need to book your car on the ferry well in advance, especially during the summer. If you go as a “foot passenger,” it is much cheaper and you can use the island’s excellent bus service.
Food & Drink: There are many local pubs and cafes. The Arran Cheese Shop and Wooleys of Arran (for their famous oatcakes) are must-visits for a picnic.
Season: It’s a year-round community, but many of the smaller attractions and tea rooms close or have shorter hours between November and March.
