The National Eisteddfod of Wales (Both North & South locations)
The National Eisteddfod of Wales
The National Eisteddfod of Wales is very much open and continues to be a highlight of the Welsh cultural calendar. As a touring festival, it moves to a new location every year, alternating between north and south Wales.
What is the Eisteddfod?
The Eisteddfod is Europe’s largest cultural festival and a massive celebration of Welsh language, arts, and culture. It is a eight-day event that dates back centuries, featuring a unique mix of traditional competitions and a modern, vibrant festival atmosphere. At its heart is the “Maes” (the festival field), which becomes a temporary village filled with stages, stalls, and thousands of visitors.
Where is it?
The location changes annually to ensure different communities across Wales can host and experience the event:
2026: The festival will be held in Llantwd, North Pembrokeshire (Eisteddfod y Garreg Las) from 1–8 August.
2027: It is scheduled to return to Powys (specifically the Glantwymyn area).
What to See and Experience
Visitors can experience a wide range of activities on more than 20 stages. These include:
The Pavilion: This is the central location for important events. These include the Crowning and Chairing of the Bard, as well as choir, dance, and solo singing contests.
Music and Performance: Performances range from the open-air Llwyfan y Maes stage, which features popular Welsh bands, to classical concerts, opera, and late-night performances at Maes B. Maes B is popular with younger people.
Art and Science: Y Lle Celf is Wales’s national art gallery for the week. The Science and Technology Pavilion offers interactive experiments and demonstrations.
Learning Welsh: Maes D is a center for Welsh learners, offering activities for all language levels.
Shopping and Food: There are many stalls selling Welsh crafts, books, and jewelry. The food village offers the best of local Welsh produce.
Typical Visit Duration
Most visitors spend a full day (about 6–8 hours) to see the main attractions. Many people choose to spend 2–3 days at the Maes to see particular competitions or evening concerts. Some people stay for the entire week, often using the official camping sites.
Who Will Enjoy it Most?
The Eisteddfod is great for several groups:
Arts and Culture Enthusiasts: People who like poetry, literature, choral music, or theater will enjoy this.
Families: Pentref Plant, the children’s village, provides activities for children.
Welsh Learners: This is a good place to practice the language.
Social Seekers: Those who enjoy live music, bars, and a community feel will enjoy this.
Suitability and Personal Circumstances
The festival is designed to be inclusive. Translation is available for non-Welsh speakers.
However, some years may be challenging for those with limited mobility, depending on the terrain and weather.
Best Time to Go
For the “Vibe”: The middle of the week often has the most important ceremonies, while the final Saturday is usually the busiest.
For Quiet: Monday and Tuesday tend to be less busy.
Weather: Dry and sunny days are best for enjoying outdoor stages.
What Makes it Unique?
The Eisteddfod is a cultural institution. Its uniqueness comes from the Gorsedd of the Bards ceremonies and contemporary art and music.
Visiting on a Budget
The Eisteddfod offers ways to save money:
Early Bird Tickets: Buying tickets in advance is often cheaper.
Evening Tickets: Reduced-price entry is available for evening entertainment.
Volunteering: Many people volunteer their time in exchange for access.
