Xplore! Science Discovery Centre – Wrexham

What is Xplore! Science Discovery Centre?

It is a dedicated science and discovery centre designed to make STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths) interactive, accessible, and fun. It is operated by North Wales Science, a charity focused on educational outreach.

Where is it located?

The centre is situated at 17 Henblas Street, Wrexham, LL13 8AE, occupying the former TJ Hughes department store building between Henblas Street and Chester Street.

What can you do, see, and experience?

  • Interactive Exhibits: There are over 80 hands-on exhibits (some counts suggest up to 100) that allow you to experiment with physics, light, sound, and biology.
  • Science Theatre: Admission typically includes a seat at one of the live science shows, which change every six weeks to cover different themes like space, superheroes, or bubbles.
  • Specialist Zones: The floor is divided into themed areas such as construction, reflection, action, and the dark.
  • Workshops: The centre hosts structured sessions ranging from Lego Challenge clubs and Astronomy clubs to slime-making and rocket launches.

Average Visit Duration

Visitors typically spend between 2 to 3 hours exploring the exhibits and watching the live shows, though some families with younger children stay for a full morning or afternoon.

Who will enjoy it most?

  • Young Explorers: Children aged 4 to 13 often get the most out of the hands-on nature of the exhibits.
  • Curiosity Seekers: Anyone with a hobby or interest in engineering, space, or DIY science will find the technical explanations and experimental stations engaging.
  • Families: It is specifically designed as a shared family experience where adults and children can interact with the same exhibits.

Personal Circumstances and Suitability

  • Accessibility: The venue is highly accessible, built on one floor with exhibits designed to be reached by wheelchair users.
  • Limited Experience: While it is “all ages,” older teenagers or adults without children may find the experience shorter if they are looking for deep academic research rather than interactive play.
  • Relaxed Sessions: For those with sensory sensitivities, the centre holds specific Relaxed Sessions (such as Sunday mornings) where noise and lighting are adjusted.

Best Time to Visit

  • Quieter Times: Visit during school term weekdays (especially Friday mornings) or Sunday mornings to avoid the busiest crowds.
  • Fun and EnergySaturday afternoons and school holidays are the most vibrant but also the busiest.
  • Weather: As an indoor attraction, it is the perfect all-weather destination, making it a primary choice for rainy days when outdoor activities aren’t possible.

What Makes it Unique?

Unlike standard museums, Xplore! follows a “touch everything” philosophy. Compared to similar nearby attractions like the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre in Widnes, Xplore! stands out due to its city-centre location and its direct integration with local community events and the nearby Tŷ Pawb cultural hub.

Budget and Cost-Effectiveness

  • Off-Peak Tickets: Discounted off-peak admission is often available on Mondays to Fridays during term time (note: public shows may not run during these slots).
  • Toddler Days: Specific days offer discounted entry for parents with toddlers, providing a calmer environment and lower prices.
  • Annual Membership: For frequent visitors, an annual pass pays for itself in less than four visits. Members receive unlimited entry for 12 months, 10% off in the science shop, and discounts on special events and guest admission.
  • Carers: Visitors with disabilities can typically admit one accompanying carer for free.

Visitor Advice

  • Food and Drink: There is an on-site café stocking local Welsh produce, but you are also near many city-centre eateries.
  • Parking: The most convenient parking is the Tŷ Pawb multi-storey car park, which is directly across the street.
  • Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing and shoes, as you will be active and moving between various hands-on stations.
  • Booking: It is strongly recommended to book tickets in advance online to secure a time slot, especially during weekends and holidays.
